Data engineer cover letter example

For data engineering roles, the cover letter should show that you can make data reliable for the people who use it. Pick one pipeline or migration you owned, explain the starting point and what changed for analysts or business teams.

Mention the company's stack if it appears in the ad, and be honest about tools you have not used yet.

Subject: Application for the Data Engineer position, data platform team

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

Your data platform team is moving from a historical data warehouse to a cloud platform, according to your ad for a Data Engineer. I have spent the past [x] years on the same kind of migration at [Company], and I would like to contribute to yours.

At [Company], our sales reporting relied on ETL jobs written over ten years in SSIS, with almost no documentation. I mapped the dependencies with the finance and sales teams, rebuilt the critical flows in dbt on Snowflake and scheduled them in Airflow. We ran both systems in parallel for two months and compared the outputs every morning before switching. The finance team now closes the month with data available earlier, and analysts can trace each figure back to its source.

I also introduced dbt tests and freshness alerts on the main tables. When a supplier changed its file format without warning, the alert caught it before the morning dashboards were published. Working with the security team, I set up masking on customer personal data so analysts only see what they need.

I would be happy to talk about your migration plan and how I could help. I can make myself available for a first call from [date].

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Should I adapt my letter to an ESN or a client company?

Yes. An ESN will look for adaptability across clients and stacks, and your ability to integrate quickly into a new team. An in-house team cares about long-term ownership of the platform. Choose examples accordingly and mention the type of contract you are applying for.

Can I apply without experience in the company's cloud?

Yes, if you show transferable experience. Concepts like partitioning, incremental loads and access control are similar across BigQuery, Snowflake and Redshift. Say which one you know, and explain how you would get up to speed on theirs.

How long should the letter be?

Around four short paragraphs. Data managers read many applications and appreciate one concrete example over a list of technologies. If the application form only has a message box, keep the project paragraph and the closing line.
