Cybersecurity engineer cover letter example

Security managers read a cover letter to judge your judgement as much as your skills. Choose one situation, an incident, an audit or a hardening project, and explain how you assessed the risk and what you did.

Show that you know their context: a bank, a hospital or an industrial site do not face the same threats or regulations.

Subject: Application for the Cybersecurity Engineer position

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

Your ad for a Cybersecurity Engineer mentions the hardening of your information system and the preparation for NIS2 obligations. I have worked on both at [Company], an industrial group with several production sites in France, and I would like to continue this work in your security team.

When I joined [Company], the Active Directory had grown over fifteen years with little control. Using the ANSSI recommendations and an audit with BloodHound, I mapped the paths to domain admin rights and proposed a plan to the IT director. We removed obsolete accounts, set up a tiered administration model and secured service accounts, site by site, without disrupting production. I also wrote the procedures that the IT team now follows when creating accounts.

Last year, I coordinated our response to a phishing campaign that compromised two mailboxes. I isolated the accounts, checked the access logs with our SOC provider, and helped the legal team decide whether a GDPR notification to the CNIL was needed. This incident led to multifactor authentication being extended to all staff.

I would be glad to discuss your security roadmap and the priorities you have set for the coming year.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Your area of expertise and the type of security work you want
  • A concrete incident, audit or project and your role in it
  • Your knowledge of French and European frameworks: ANSSI, NIS2, ISO 27001, GDPR
  • How you work with IT and business teams
  • Your continuous learning: labs, certifications, CTFs

Mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention a security clearance in my letter?

If the ad mentions a clearance (« habilitation ») and you hold one, mention it briefly. If you do not, do not worry: employers start the procedure after hiring. Note that some defence and public posts require French nationality or make clearance harder for foreign nationals.

How technical should the letter be?

Technical enough to be credible, readable enough for a recruiter. Name the main tools and frameworks in passing, then focus on the situation and your decisions. Hiring managers will test your technical depth during interviews and practical exercises.

What changes when applying to a PASSI-qualified audit firm?

These firms audit clients under an ANSSI qualification, so they look closely at your report-writing and your respect for audit rules of engagement. Mention audits you took part in, the type of scope (web, internal network, Active Directory) and your role in writing findings. Offer an anonymised report extract if you have one you are allowed to share.
