Management consultant resume example

A consultant en management helps companies and public bodies improve how they are organised and run.

Missions last from a few weeks to several months and follow a pattern: understanding the client's issue, collecting data and interviewing teams, analysing processes or costs, building recommendations and, more and more often, helping to implement them. Topics vary with the firm: operational efficiency, reorganisation, change management, project management offices (PMO), finance transformation, purchasing, or HR processes. Junior consultants spend much time in Excel and PowerPoint, preparing steering committee slides and workshop materials. As you move up, you lead workshops, manage a small team and handle the client relationship. Consultants often work at the client's premises, with travel depending on the mission, and the pace is set by deadlines and steering committees.

Tips

  • Present each mission with the client sector, the issue, your role and the result, while keeping clients anonymous.
  • Put your school and degree high on the CV: French firms still weigh them heavily.
  • Show both analytical and client-facing skills, since recruiters test both.
  • Use action verbs about what you did yourself, not what the team achieved.
  • Keep it to one page for junior profiles, two at most for senior ones.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Naming clients without permission or revealing confidential results.
  • Listing missions without saying what you personally did.
  • Using too much consulting jargon without concrete content.
  • Forgetting language skills, important in international firms.

Working as a management consultant in France

Management consulting is not a regulated profession in France. Firms recruit mostly at Master's level (Bac+5) from business schools, engineering schools and university programmes in management or strategy, and experienced professionals for sector expertise. Most consultants have cadre status and many firms apply the Syntec collective agreement, often with a forfait jours working time arrangement. English is widely used in international firms, but French is expected for most clients. Search for « consultant en management », « consultant en organisation », « consultant transformation », « consultant PMO » or « consultant junior ».

Frequently asked questions

Which background do French consulting firms prefer?

Strategy and large management firms mostly recruit from business schools, engineering schools and some university master's programmes. Smaller firms and specialised boutiques also hire experienced professionals from the sectors they advise. Your CV should make your academic level and any sector expertise very clear.

How do I describe confidential missions?

Describe the client by sector and size rather than by name, such as "a European car parts manufacturer". Explain the issue, your role and the type of outcome. This is standard practice in consulting and shows you respect confidentiality.

Should my consulting CV be in English or French?

It depends on the firm. International firms often accept or prefer English CVs, while French firms and public sector specialists expect French. Having both versions ready is common. Make sure your French CV uses French terms for degrees and job titles.
