Management accountant resume example

In France, a contrôleur de gestion is closer to a financial business partner than to a bookkeeper.

You build the annual budget with operational managers, update forecasts during the year, and explain every month why actual results differ from the plan: a price increase from a supplier, a site that missed its volume target, overtime that crept up. You design and maintain the reporting tools, usually in Excel and a BI tool on top of the ERP, and you present the figures to the management committee. In industry the job leans towards cost accounting and cost per unit; in retail or services, towards margin analysis per store, client or project. The closing calendar sets the rhythm, with heavy weeks at month end and during the budget season in autumn.

Tips

  • Show the scope of your controlling: one site, a business unit, or a group consolidation.
  • Give one example of a decision your analysis changed, such as a product line repriced or a cost reduced.
  • Name the ERP module and BI tool: SAP CO and Power BI are common filters in French job ads.
  • Mention whether you worked in industry, retail or services, since the methods differ a lot.
  • Keep the CV readable for an operations manager as well as a CFO.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the job as accounting tasks only, with no analysis or recommendation.
  • Listing every report you produced without saying who used it.
  • Hiding your Excel and data skills at the bottom of the CV.
  • Using unexplained internal acronyms from a previous employer.

Working as a management accountant in France

Contrôleur de gestion is not regulated in France. Employers usually expect a Bac+5: a business school master's in finance or management control, a university master's in « contrôle de gestion et audit organisationnel », or an engineering degree with a finance specialisation. The DSCG is also appreciated. Large groups often work in English, while SMEs and plants work in French with operational teams. Search with « contrôleur de gestion », « contrôleur de gestion industriel », « business controller », « contrôleur financier » and « analyste FP&A ».

Frequently asked questions

Is management accountant the right English term for contrôleur de gestion?

It is close. In international groups you will also see financial controller, business controller, FP&A analyst or plant controller. In French ads, contrôleur de gestion covers all of these, so read the missions rather than the title, and use both terms on your CV.

Do I need an accounting diploma?

Not necessarily. Most controllers in France have a master's from a business school, a university finance degree or an engineering background with a finance specialisation. What matters is that you understand accounting entries well enough to trust and explain the figures.

Should I add a dashboard example to my CV?

Not as an image. Describe it in one bullet (what it tracks, who uses it) and bring a sanitised screenshot or demo to the interview. Recruiters appreciate seeing how you present data, but they also check you respect confidentiality.
