Childminder resume example

An assistante maternelle looks after other people's young children in her own home, under an approval (agrément) granted by the département's mother and child protection service (PMI).

The day follows each child's rhythm: arrivals from early morning, a bottle for the baby, outdoor time or a session at the local childminders' hub (relais petite enfance), lunch, naps in separate beds, then games until parents pick up. You are employed directly by each family, with a contract for each child, and paid through the Pajemploi system. You keep a notebook or app of meals, sleep and small events for parents. Your home itself is part of the job: safety equipment, a quiet sleeping space and inspections by the PMI.

Tips

  • State your approval clearly: number of places, ages covered and the date it was granted or renewed.
  • Describe your home in one line: garden, separate sleeping room, ground floor or lift, no pets.
  • Mention the relais petite enfance you attend and any training taken through continuing education.
  • Give your hours and whether you accept early mornings, Saturdays or irregular schedules.
  • Add references from previous families with their agreement.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to mention the approval, which is the first thing parents check.
  • Writing about loving children instead of describing your day and your methods.
  • Not saying where you live, although parents choose by distance from home or work.
  • Listing every past job equally when childcare experience should come first.

Working as a childminder in France

The French title is assistant maternel or assistante maternelle, sometimes shortened to nounou agréée. This is a regulated activity: you need an approval from the PMI of the département where you live, followed by compulsory initial training, part of it before you welcome your first child. The approval sets the number and ages of children. You can work alone at home or with colleagues in a maison d'assistants maternels (MAM). Families employ you directly and declare your pay through Pajemploi. Do not confuse this role with garde d'enfants à domicile, where you work in the parents' home without approval. Non-EU candidates need a residence permit that allows work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a childminder without the PMI approval?

No. Caring for children in your home for pay requires an approval from the département's PMI. It covers your home, your health, your ability to care for children and your French, and it states how many children you may look after. Without it, parents cannot receive public childcare aid and the activity is illegal.

Do I need a resume if parents contact me directly?

It helps. Many parents find childminders through the relais petite enfance, the monenfant.fr site or word of mouth. A one-page profile with your approval, your home, your hours and your references answers their questions before the first meeting and shows you take the job seriously.

What should I put first on the resume?

Your approval and your availability. Then your experience with children, your training (initial training, CAP AEPE, first aid) and a short description of the activities you offer. Personal details such as having raised your own children can appear briefly, but they are not a substitute for professional experience.
