Welder cover letter example

A workshop manager or site supervisor wants to know three things: your processes and qualifications, the type of work you have done (shop, site, pipe, structure) and whether your welds pass inspection.

Keep the letter factual and offer a test weld, which is how most welders are hired.

Subject: Application: TIG/MAG Welder, [Company]

Dear [Mr/Ms Last Name],

I am applying for the welder position at [Company]. Your work on stainless steel equipment for the food industry matches my experience, and I would like to join a workshop where preparation and finish quality matter.

I have worked as a welder for [x] years, first in a steel structure workshop in MAG 135, then at [Current company] on stainless steel pipework. I hold ISO 9606-1 qualifications in TIG 141 on stainless steel, all positions, and in electrode 111 on carbon steel. My welds are regularly sampled for dye penetrant and radiographic testing, and I take care of my own repairs when a defect is found.

I prepare my own bevels, tack the spools from isometric drawings and work from the WPS/DMOS, recording parameters and consumables for traceability. I also work on site under hot work permits, which has taught me to organise my area and to respect fire watch rules.

I would be glad to do a test weld in your workshop at your convenience. I can send copies of my qualification certificates on request.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter really necessary for a welder?

For temp agencies, often not: they focus on your qualifications. For direct applications to workshops or industrial companies, a short letter helps the manager see quickly which processes, materials and positions you master, and that you accept a test.

Should I mention travel availability?

Yes, if the job involves site work. Many welding jobs in energy, maintenance shutdowns or construction require travel and sometimes long assignments away from home. Say clearly what you accept, as recruiters often filter on this point.

How do I explain a gap in qualifications?

Be direct: say which qualification expired and that you are ready to renew it, ideally with a date. Employers often organise the test themselves, so a lapsed qualification is not a blocker if your practical level is good.
