Welder resume example

A welder joins metal parts by fusion, working from a drawing and a welding procedure specification (WPS, called DMOS in France) that fixes the process, filler metal and parameters.

In French workshops processes are usually named by their ISO numbers: 111 for coated electrode, 135 for MAG, 141 for TIG. A typical day starts with reading the plan, preparing the edges (grinding, bevelling, degreasing), tacking the parts on a jig and setting the machine. Then you weld, often in difficult positions on pipework, check the bead visually and correct defects before inspection. Welders work in boilermaking and steel structure workshops, shipyards, energy and nuclear sites, rail and aeronautics, either in the shop or on site.

Career change

Former [previous job] retrained through the Titre professionnel Soudeur assembleur industriel. Brings steady hands, patience and a careful approach to safety, and now welds MAG and TIG on steel assemblies in a fabrication shop.

Tips

  • List each qualification with process number, material, position and expiry: this is what recruiters scan first.
  • Mention the inspection methods your welds have passed (visual, dye penetrant, radiography).
  • Specify shop or site work, and confined spaces or heights if relevant.
  • Name the sectors: boilermaking, nuclear, rail, shipbuilding, food-grade stainless.
  • Keep copies of your qualification certificates ready to send.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing « all processes » without specifying qualifications.
  • Forgetting positions and thicknesses, which define the jobs you can take.
  • Listing expired qualifications as current.
  • Ignoring preparation and plan reading, which employers value as much as the weld.

Working as a welder in France

In France, search for soudeur or soudeuse, soudeur TIG, soudeur MAG, soudeur tuyauteur, soudeur assembleur or chaudronnier soudeur. The usual training routes are the CAP Réalisations industrielles en chaudronnerie ou soudage, the Bac pro Technicien en chaudronnerie industrielle and the Titres professionnels Soudeur assembleur industriel or Soudeur TIG électrode enrobée. No diploma is legally required, but employers ask for welding qualifications to NF EN ISO 9606-1, which must be kept valid through regular confirmation. Nuclear and pressure equipment work adds specific requirements. Hiring through temp agencies and test welds is very common.

Frequently asked questions

How do I present my welding qualifications on a resume?

Use a dedicated section near the top with one line per qualification: standard, process number, material group, position, thickness or diameter range, and validity date. For example « ISO 9606-1, 141, stainless steel, H-L045, valid until [date] ». Recruiters and agencies compare these lines directly with the job requirements.

Are foreign welding certificates valid in France?

Qualifications issued under ISO 9606 are an international standard, so many employers accept them if they are current and signed by a recognised body. Some sites, especially nuclear or pressure equipment, will retest you anyway. Bring the original certificates and be ready for a test weld.

Should I mention the welding test at the interview stage?

Yes, offering to do a test coupon shows confidence. Most workshops ask for one before hiring. Say which processes and positions you can test on, and arrive with your own gloves and mask if requested.
