Sports coach cover letter example

Clubs, municipal sports services and fitness centres look first at your diploma, because it defines what you may legally teach. After that they want to know which age groups you coach, how you keep sessions safe and whether you are available when they need you, often evenings, Wednesdays and weekends.

Subject: Application for Swimming Coach, [Club or pool]

Dear [Name],

Your club is recruiting a swimming coach for the start of the season, and I would like to apply. I hold the BPJEPS Activités Aquatiques et de la Natation, a valid professional card and the PSC1, and I have taught at [Pool or club] for the past [x] years.

I work with three main groups: children learning to swim, young club swimmers preparing their first competitions, and adults improving their technique. With the youngest, I use games and short challenges so they gain confidence in deep water. With competitive swimmers, I plan sessions over the season with the head coach, alternating technique, endurance and starts and turns. I also supervise the pool during public sessions, so I am used to keeping an eye on the whole water area while teaching.

I am available on weekday evenings, Wednesdays and Saturday mornings, and I can accompany swimmers to regional competitions on Sundays.

I would be glad to meet you or to run a trial session with one of your groups.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Diploma, specialty and professional card
  • Age groups and levels you coach
  • A concrete example of a programme or session you designed
  • Safety and first aid
  • Availability on evenings, Wednesdays and weekends

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about your passion for sport without stating your diploma.
  • Describing your own training rather than the people you coached.
  • Leaving out safety, which is a legal responsibility for the coach.
  • Not mentioning which days and hours you can work.

Frequently asked questions

Do clubs expect a cover letter?

Smaller clubs often recruit by phone or through the federation network, and a short email is enough. Municipalities and larger fitness chains usually expect a letter with the resume. In every case, attach a copy of your diploma and professional card.

Should I mention the CQP if I also have a BPJEPS?

Mention both if the CQP covers a different activity, for example a fitness CQP alongside a BPJEPS in team sports. Each qualification defines what you can teach, so the employer needs the complete list.

Can I apply before receiving my professional card?

Yes, if your diploma is obtained and the card is being processed. Say so in the letter with the date you applied. You must hold the card, or proof of your declaration, before you start coaching for pay.
