Youth worker cover letter example

Leisure centre directors and youth service managers read applications looking for people who will be reliable with a group and bring ideas. They check your diploma, the ages you know and your availability, especially for holidays.

A short letter with one concrete activity or project is the most convincing.

Subject: Application for the animateur position, accueil de loisirs [Name]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the animateur position at the [Name] leisure centre for the coming school year. I hold the BAFA and am preparing the BPJEPS loisirs tous publics through work-study, and I have worked with children aged six to twelve in periscolaire and holiday programmes.

Last year, at the leisure centre of [Town], I built a cycle of Wednesday workshops around a garden in the centre's courtyard. The children chose the plants, measured the growth each week and cooked a meal with the vegetables in June for their parents. This project followed the centre's educational aims on autonomy and the environment, and it gave a role to children who were often withdrawn in group games.

I also took part in a summer camp by the sea, where I was responsible for the beach supervision and evening activities. I apply the safety rules seriously and I like preparing activities with the team in advance.

I am available on weekdays, Wednesdays and during all school holidays. I can bring the planning sheets from the garden project to an interview, along with two ideas for your Wednesday programme.

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • Your diploma (BAFA, BPJEPS) and first aid certificate
  • The age groups and settings you know
  • An activity or project you led from start to finish
  • Your specialities and the ideas you would bring
  • Your availability for school holidays and stays

Mistakes to avoid

  • Talking about loving children instead of describing an activity.
  • Forgetting your diploma or presenting a BAFA in progress as obtained.
  • Leaving out availability for holidays, which is often decisive.
  • Sending the same letter for a teenage youth club and a nursery-age leisure centre.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter expected for a summer camp job?

Holiday organisations often use an online form, but a few lines on your experience, the ages you prefer and your specialities help. For a permanent job with a town or association, a proper letter is still expected and is read alongside your diplomas.

Can I work as an animateur on a student visa?

A valid student residence permit allows paid work within an annual hour limit. Periscolaire hours and a few weeks of holiday programmes usually fit within it. Check your permit's conditions before signing.

Can I apply while my BAFA is still in progress?

Yes, and many first jobs are found this way: the practical placement of the BAFA must take place in an accueil collectif de mineurs. Write "BAFA in progress" with the stage you have reached (theory session completed, placement to do). Never present it as obtained, since the director must declare qualified staff to the authorities.
