Youth worker resume example

In France, an animateur runs leisure and educational activities for children and teenagers outside school time. During term, much of the work is periscolaire: the morning welcome before class, the lunch break, after-school activities, and Wednesdays at the accueil de loisirs (the former centre aéré).

In the holidays, you may run day programmes or go away on a summer camp (colonie de vacances) with a group for one or several weeks. With teenagers, in a youth club or a maison des jeunes, the job leans towards projects: a trip the group finances itself, a music studio, a sports tournament. Every activity is planned in advance, written into the structure's educational project and supervised under the regulations for accueils collectifs de mineurs (ACM), with attention to safety and to each child.

Tips

  • Put your diplomas first: BAFA, BAFD, CPJEPS, BPJEPS, DEJEPS, with the year obtained.
  • Specify the age groups and settings: periscolaire, accueil de loisirs, colonie, youth club.
  • Give one or two projects you built, with what the children or teenagers produced.
  • Mention your specialities (sport, music, science, drama, digital) and any related qualifications.
  • Note your availability for holidays and residential stays.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every summer job as 'animateur' without age groups or activities.
  • Forgetting the BAFA or first aid certificate, often checked before anything else.
  • Writing 'I love working with children' without a single example.
  • Presenting the job as babysitting rather than educational work.

Working as a youth worker in France

Search for animateur, animatrice, animateur périscolaire, animateur jeunesse or animateur de centre de loisirs; in towns the civil service titles are adjoint d'animation and animateur territorial. Accueils collectifs de mineurs (ACM), meaning leisure centres and holiday camps, are regulated by the State: staff must meet qualification rules, and the BAFA is the usual entry certificate for occasional work, with the BAFD for directors. Professional diplomas from the youth and sports ministry (CPJEPS, BPJEPS, DEJEPS) lead to permanent posts. Employers check that staff are not barred from working with minors. Students with a valid residence permit can take part-time and holiday jobs within legal limits.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BAFA enough to work as an animateur?

The BAFA lets you work occasionally, mainly during holidays, often under a contrat d'engagement éducatif. For a permanent job, employers usually ask for a professional diploma such as the CPJEPS or the BPJEPS. The BAFD is needed to direct a leisure centre or a camp.

Does the title 'youth worker' mean the same as animateur?

Not exactly. In English-speaking countries, youth work often includes informal education and social support. In France, the animateur organises leisure and educational activities, while street work with teenagers in difficulty belongs to educators in prévention spécialisée. Use animateur or animateur jeunesse in your French searches.

Should I mention summer camp experience abroad?

Yes. Experience in camps abroad shows you can lead a group and handle residential life. Explain the role briefly, the ages and the activities, and indicate whether you hold or are preparing the BAFA, since French employers need it for the staffing rules.
