Specialist support worker cover letter example

Heads of service in social and medico-social establishments read letters to see how you think about the people you support. They look for a clear understanding of their public, the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and solid writing, since reports are a big part of the job.

A structured one-page letter is expected.

Subject: Application for the éducateur spécialisé position, [Establishment name]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the éducateur spécialisé position at [Establishment name], which welcomes adolescents placed under child protection. I obtained the DEES in [year] and have since worked in a MECS in [City].

As referent for several teenagers, I build their individual plans with them and their families, write reports for the ASE and the children's judge, and coordinate with their schools. One young girl refused all contact with her mother. By organising short, prepared meetings in a neutral place, then gradually longer ones, we restored a link that the judge later decided to extend.

I read your establishment's project with interest, especially your work on preparing young people for adult life. I would like to contribute through the budget and housing workshops I have developed, which helped several young people move to a supported flat.

I am used to residential shifts and on-call duty and can start from [date]. I would be glad to present my practice in an interview.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about helping others in general terms without a field example.

  • Giving identifiable details about people you have supported.
  • Writing a letter that is too long or poorly structured, which raises doubts about your reports.

Frequently asked questions

Should I send a spontaneous application?

Yes. Associations in the social sector often recruit through spontaneous applications and replacements. Address the letter to the director or head of service, mention the establishment's public and project, and say clearly that you are open to fixed-term contracts if that is the case.

Can I apply in English to an international organisation in France?

Some international NGOs work in English, but the great majority of French establishments work entirely in French: team meetings, reports, contacts with judges and families. Write in French unless the advertisement is in English, and state your French level clearly.

How long should the letter be?

One page. Four paragraphs are usually enough: who you are and your diploma, your experience with one concrete example, why this establishment, and your availability. Recruiters will read it as a sample of your writing, so check grammar and structure carefully.
