Social worker cover letter example

Recruiters in social services read the letter as a writing sample. They want a clear, measured text that shows you understand their public, the procedures you will handle and the partners you will work with.

For a public employer, specify your status and follow formal conventions.

Subject: Application for the assistant de service social position, [Service name]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the assistant de service social position at the [Service name] of [City]. I obtained the DEASS in [year] and have worked since then in the local social service of [Town], where I follow families and isolated people.

My work combines appointments, home visits and written assessments. Last year, I supported a single mother threatened with eviction after a period of unemployment. With her, I prepared an application to the housing solidarity fund, negotiated a repayment plan with the landlord and the CAF, and worked with the employment service on her return to work. The eviction procedure was stopped and the family kept its home.

I am used to child protection assessments, reports to the CRIP and coordination with schools and the PMI. I value working in a team with éducateurs, CESF and psychologists, and I find it useful to discuss difficult situations in analysis of practice sessions.

I am available from [date] and can meet you at your convenience, together with the service's technical adviser if that is your usual practice.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Frequently asked questions

Who should I address the letter to in a public service?

For a département or a town, address it to the president of the departmental council or the mayor, as indicated in the advertisement, and mention the reference of the offer. For a hospital, write to the director of human resources. Follow French administrative conventions for the opening and closing.

How can I describe a case without breaking professional secrecy?

Remove everything that could identify the person: first name, exact age, neighbourhood, employer, dates. Keep only the type of situation, what you did and the outcome, for example a family facing eviction and the repayment plan you negotiated. Recruiters check this closely, because a careless example in a letter suggests the same carelessness in reports.

Should I mention the concours for the territorial civil service?

Yes, if you passed it. Departments and towns can hire a laureate as a civil servant directly. If you have not passed it, you can still be hired as a contract worker, so state your situation clearly so the HR department knows how to process your application.
