Sales associate cover letter example

Store managers in France read cover letters quickly, often in the back office. They want to know three things: that you know the brand and its customers, that you can be on the floor when they need you, and that you speak enough French to advise someone.

A short letter, sent by email with the resume attached, is usually enough.

Subject: Application for the sales associate position, [Store name] [City]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the sales associate position advertised for your [City] store. I have shopped at [Brand] for several years and I like the way your teams let customers browse before offering help; it is the approach I try to use myself.

For the past [x] months I have worked at [Previous store], a womenswear shop in [City]. I advise customers on sizes and outfits, run the fitting rooms on Saturdays and handle exchanges at the till. During the last winter sales, I worked the full period and learned to keep the tables tidy while serving a constant queue. I also help with deliveries in the morning, which taught me where everything is and what is running low.

I speak French at a B2 level and English fluently, which is useful with the international customers who visit the [neighbourhood] area. I am available on weekends and can work late openings.

I would be glad to come to the store to meet you or to do a trial day. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • Why this brand and this store, in one concrete sentence
  • A moment where you turned a hesitant customer into a sale
  • Your availability: weekends, late openings, sales periods
  • Your French level and any other language useful to tourists
  • Your habits on stock and display, not just selling

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about your passion for fashion without saying what you did in a shop.
  • Forgetting to state your availability, which forces the manager to call just to ask.
  • Copying the brand's slogan back at them.
  • Sending a two-page letter for a floor role.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drop my resume in store instead of sending a letter?

Yes, and in French retail it often works well. Go on a weekday morning, not on Saturday, ask for the manager, and bring a resume with a short note. Many stores still recruit this way, especially for seasonal and student contracts.

Should the cover letter be in French?

For a French store, yes, unless the ad is in English or targets English-speaking customers. Even a simple, correct letter in French shows the manager you can deal with customers. Ask someone to proofread it, because mistakes stand out.

How long should the letter be?

Around half a page. Three or four short paragraphs are enough: why this store, what you have done on a shop floor, your availability and languages, and a closing line offering to meet or do a trial day.
