Roofer cover letter example

Roofing companies need people they can trust on a roof: safe, reliable and skilled with the local materials. Your letter should say which coverings you lay, whether you do zinc work, and how you work with safety equipment.

Keep it short; the owner will often call you the same day.

Subject: Application for Roofer and Zinc Worker

Dear [Owner's name],

Slate and zinc are the materials I have worked with most since my apprenticeship, and they make up most of your work in [City] and the surrounding area. I would like to apply for your roofer and zinc worker vacancy.

I hold a CAP Couvreur and a Mention Complémentaire in zinc work, and I have spent [x] years at [Company]. I take part in complete re-roofing jobs, from stripping the old covering to laying battens, underlay and slates, and I make and fit gutters, downpipes and flashings in zinc. After storms, I also handle leak repairs, often alone with a ladder and a harness, which taught me to assess a roof quickly and to explain the situation clearly to the owner.

Safety comes first on every job: I set up edge protection and check anchor points before starting, and I hold the training certificates for work at height and for mobile scaffolding. I have a driving licence and can drive the company van with a trailer.

A trial period on one of your roofs would let you judge my work directly, and I can come in to discuss it whenever suits you.

Best regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention storm call-outs and seasonal availability?

Yes, briefly. Roofing work peaks after storms and during dry spells, and owners need people who accept urgent leak repairs at short notice or longer days when the weather allows. Saying whether you are available for these call-outs answers a question the owner would otherwise ask on the phone.

Should I mention that I have no fear of heights?

It is expected, so it adds little on its own. Show it through facts: steep roofs, high buildings, work on scaffolding or from a cherry picker. Mention your safety training at the same time, so the employer sees someone who is comfortable and careful.

Can I apply for roofing work after training abroad?

Yes. Explain which roofing systems you worked on and how they compare with French ones. Tiles, slate and zinc techniques differ between countries, so show your willingness to learn local methods, for example through a short training course or a trial period.
