Roofer resume example

A roofer in France works on the outer skin of buildings, and the materials change from one region to the next: clay tiles in the south and west, natural slate in Brittany and the Loire, zinc sheets on Paris rooftops, stone lauzes on some mountain houses.

On a typical job you set up the edge protection or scaffolding, strip the old covering, check and replace the battens, lay the underlay, then fix the tiles or slates in rows, cutting them around chimneys and roof windows. Flashing, gutters and downpipes in zinc or copper are often part of the work, which is why many roofers are also zinc workers (couvreur-zingueur). Leak repairs, storm damage and roof insulation make up much of the rest of the year, and more and more roofers install solar panels.

Tips

  • Name the materials you lay, since roofing in France varies by region.
  • Mention zinc work separately: it is a distinct skill that many employers look for.
  • List your safety training for work at height and scaffolding.
  • Highlight any work on listed or historic buildings if you have done it.
  • Say if you have a heavy vehicle licence or can drive a van with a trailer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing 'roofing' without specifying tile, slate, zinc or flat roofs.
  • Confusing pitched roofing and flat roof waterproofing, which is a separate trade in France.
  • Omitting safety training, which employers must check.
  • Leaving out storm and emergency repair experience.

Working as a roofer in France

Search for couvreur, couvreur-zingueur, zingueur or ouvrier couvreur; flat roof waterproofing jobs are listed as étancheur. The usual qualifications are the CAP Couvreur, the Brevet Professionnel Couvreur and the Mention Complémentaire Zinguerie, often prepared through apprenticeship or with the Compagnons du Devoir. Employees do not need a licence to practise, but work at height is tightly regulated: employers must provide collective protection and training, and scaffolding assembly requires specific training. Roofing companies must hold ten-year liability insurance (garantie décennale). Paris zinc roofs, regional slate and listed buildings each have their own techniques, so local knowledge counts.

Frequently asked questions

Is flat roofing part of the job?

In France, flat roof waterproofing with bitumen or synthetic membranes is usually done by an étancheur, a separate trade. Some roofers do both. If you have membrane experience, mention it clearly, as it widens the companies you can apply to.

Should I mention solar panel installation?

Yes. Fixing panels on a pitched roof while keeping the covering watertight is roofing work, and many companies now offer it. The electrical connection is usually done by a qualified electrician, so describe precisely which part you handled.

How important is heritage experience?

For companies working on old town centres, churches or listed buildings, it matters a lot. Slate cut by hand, lead details and traditional zinc are skills that set you apart. Mention the type of building and the techniques you used.
