Bricklayer resume example

In France, the job closest to bricklayer is maçon (maçonne), and it is broader than laying bricks.

French houses are mostly built with concrete blocks (parpaings), hollow clay bricks or cellular concrete, so a maçon builds walls from these, but also pours foundations, sets up formwork and reinforcement for slabs, lintels and posts, and lays screeds. On renovation sites, the work includes opening a load-bearing wall with a beam, rebuilding a stone wall with lime mortar or creating a doorway. The day starts early on site, reading plans with the team leader, checking levels and squareness, preparing mortar or receiving the concrete mixer truck. You work outdoors in all seasons, with scaffolding, a mini excavator or a site crane nearby, and with a constant concern for safety and site cleanliness.

Tips

  • Specify the type of work: new build, renovation, stone, reinforced concrete.
  • List your diploma (CAP, BP, titre professionnel) and safety certificates.
  • Mention driving licence and own transport, often required for site work.
  • Name the equipment you can operate and your CACES categories.
  • Keep the CV short and clear: one page is enough.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing only « maçon » without the kind of sites you worked on.
  • Forgetting certificates such as CACES or scaffold training.
  • Leaving gaps between temporary assignments unexplained.
  • A CV with long text that a site manager will not read.

Working as a bricklayer in France

Working as an employed maçon is not regulated, but employers expect a CAP maçon, a BP maçon, a Bac pro in building structural work (gros œuvre) or a titre professionnel maçon; the titre « maçon du bâti ancien » targets stone and heritage renovation. Setting up your own masonry business is different: it requires a CAP, BEP or equivalent, or three years of experience in the trade. Apprenticeship through a CFA du BTP or the Compagnons du Devoir is the classic route. CACES certificates may be asked for mini excavators, telehandlers or mobile platforms, and every worker on a site carries the carte BTP requested by the employer. Search for « maçon », « maçon coffreur », « maçon VRD », « maçon rénovation » or « chef d'équipe maçon ».

Frequently asked questions

Can I work through temporary agencies as a maçon?

Yes, temporary work (intérim) is very common in construction. Agencies place maçons on sites for days or months, and it is a good way to discover companies. Bring your diploma, safety certificates and identity documents. Many temporary workers are later hired permanently by a company they liked.

Is my foreign bricklaying experience recognised?

Site managers judge you on the wall, not the paperwork, often during the trial period. French houses rely heavily on concrete blocks (parpaings), chained reinforced corners and lintels poured on site, so if you mainly laid facing brick or timber frame elsewhere, say so honestly. A titre professionnel maçon taken through a VAE or an adult training centre turns your experience into a diploma employers know.

What is the BTP card?

The carte d'identification professionnelle du BTP is a card your employer must request for every worker on a construction site in France, including temporary workers. It is checked during site inspections. Your employer handles the application.
