Crane operator resume example

A grutier on a French building site spends most of the day in the cab of a tower crane, sometimes dozens of metres above the ground, moving formwork, rebar cages, concrete skips, precast elements and pallets of blocks.

Each morning starts with checks: wind speed, limit switches, brakes, cables and the logbook. Then the work is a constant exchange by radio with the slingers (élingueurs) and the site foreman, who decide where each load must go. You need fine control, patience and a good sense of distances, because the load swings and other cranes may share the airspace. On some sites you also help assemble and dismantle the crane. Others operate mobile cranes on trucks, which means daily travel between jobs.

Tips

  • Put your CACES categories and their validity dates at the top of the resume.
  • Name the crane types you have operated: top-slewing, self-erecting, mobile.
  • Mention the type of sites: housing, offices, bridges, industrial.
  • Add your medical fitness and any work-at-height training.
  • Say whether you accept long-term travel, as many crane jobs are away from home.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the CACES expiry date, which is the first thing employers check.
  • Mixing tower crane and mobile crane experience without distinguishing them.
  • Writing a long profile instead of a clear list of machines and sites.

Working as a crane operator in France

Operating a crane in France requires a written driving authorisation from the employer, based on a medical fitness check and proof of competence, which in practice means a CACES: R487 for tower cranes, R483 for mobile cranes, R490 for loader cranes. Foreign licences are rarely accepted as they are. Training routes include the Titre professionnel conducteur de grue à tour and the CAP or BP conducteur d'engins: travaux publics et carrières, but many operators come from the site and add the CACES later. Search « grutier », « conducteur de grue à tour », « grutier élingueur » or « grutier GMA » for mobile cranes. Temp agencies are a major entry point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work with a crane licence from another country?

French employers generally require a CACES issued by a certified testing body in France, then give you a written driving authorisation (autorisation de conduite). A foreign licence proves experience and can shorten the training, but you will usually have to pass the CACES test here.

How long is a CACES valid?

For crane categories, a CACES is generally valid for five years. You must then pass the test again to renew it. Write the date of issue on your resume so the employer knows when a renewal is due.

Should I list slinging experience?

Yes. Many offers are for « grutier élingueur », and employers like operators who know the work on the ground. It shows you understand what the slinger sees and makes coordination easier.
