Lifeguard and swimming teacher cover letter example

A pool manager reading your letter wants three things confirmed quickly: that your qualifications are valid, that you can be trusted on the chair during a crowded Saturday afternoon, and that you can teach the publics the pool actually serves.

Show you have read the timetable: school slots, aquafitness classes, baby swimming.

Subject: Application for the maître-nageur sauveteur position, [Aquatic centre name]

Dear [Manager's name],

I am applying for the maître-nageur sauveteur position advertised at [Aquatic centre name]. I hold the BPJEPS Activités aquatiques et de la natation, my CAEPMNS was renewed in [month and year], and my PSE1 refresher is up to date.

For the past [x] years I have worked at the [Name] pool in [City], a facility with a 25-metre pool, a learning pool and a paddling area. I share supervision shifts with a team of [x] MNS and act as safety lead on weekend afternoons, when attendance is highest. I know the pool safety plan well and take part in the rescue drills each term.

Teaching is the part of the job I enjoy most. Each week I take [x] primary school classes with their teachers and prepare pupils for the 'savoir nager' test. I also run an adult course for people who are afraid of deep water, which taught me to slow down and build confidence step by step. I lead aquagym and aquabike sessions, including a class for older participants.

I noticed that your centre is opening baby swimming sessions on Saturday mornings. I trained in this activity last year and would be glad to help set it up. I am available for weekend and evening shifts and during school holidays.

I would be happy to meet you and, if useful, to take part in a practical test in the water.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • Your diplomas and the date of your last CAEPMNS and first aid update
  • Concrete supervision experience: type of pool or beach, crowd levels
  • The groups you teach and how you adapt your lessons
  • Aquafitness classes you can lead from the first week
  • Availability for weekends, evenings and school holidays

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not giving the renewal date of the CAEPMNS, which the employer must check.
  • Describing your love of swimming instead of your safety and teaching experience.
  • Ignoring the pool's actual programme, such as school slots or aquafitness classes.
  • Leaving availability vague when the job involves weekends and holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Should I write differently for a municipal pool and a private centre?

Yes. A municipality will look at your experience with school classes and public service hours. A private aquatic or fitness centre cares more about aquafitness classes, customer relations and selling lesson packages. Adjust the second and third paragraphs to match.

How do I apply for a summer beach post?

Municipalities usually recruit seasonal lifeguards in winter and early spring. Mention your BNSSA or MNS diploma, your first aid level, any previous beach seasons and your exact dates of availability. Some posts also require a boat licence, so add it if you hold one.

I trained abroad. Can I mention it?

Yes, but state clearly where your French recognition stands. Write the name of your foreign qualification and whether you have obtained, or applied for, recognition from the French sports authorities. A pool cannot hire you to teach for pay without it.
