Butcher cover letter example

Butchery recruiters are often the shop owner or the head of a supermarket meat department. They want to know quickly which animals you can work, whether you can serve customers and how reliable you are.

Mention their shop, describe your cutting room and counter skills, and offer a trial.

Subject: Application for Butcher position, [Shop name]

Dear [Owner's name],

I am applying for the butcher position at [Shop name]. I know your shop for its dry-aged beef from local farms, and I would like to work with that quality of meat and with customers who come for advice.

I trained as an apprentice at [Shop] in [City], where I earned my CAP Boucher, then stayed [x] years as a butcher. I bone and cut beef, veal and lamb on my own, tie roasts, and prepare stuffed poultry and skewers for the weekend. At the counter, I enjoy explaining which cut suits a recipe and how to cook it, which helps customers try less familiar pieces such as the paleron or the araignée.

I follow hygiene procedures rigorously and keep the temperature and traceability records our HACCP plan requires. I also helped train our apprentice last year, mainly on trimming and roast tying.

I am available on Saturdays and during the Christmas and Easter periods. I would be happy to do a trial day so you can see my work in the cutting room and at the counter.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention poultry, offal or horse meat experience?

Yes, in one precise sentence. Some shops are boucher-volailler, boucher-tripier or still sell horse meat, and an owner who needs someone to dress poultry or prepare tripe will look for it first. If you have only beef, veal, lamb and pork experience, say so plainly rather than stretching it.

How do I describe a foreign butchery qualification?

Give its name and a short explanation of the content: duration, animals covered, practical training. Then add the cuts you have learned in French style if you have. Owners will judge your knife skills on a trial, but a clear description helps you get that trial.

What if I have only supermarket experience?

Present it positively: volume, hygiene and boning skills. Then explain why you want to move to an artisan shop, for example to work with carcasses, to serve customers or to learn caterer products. Show that you are ready to learn the shop's way of doing things.
