Accounts clerk cover letter example

A chief accountant or firm partner hiring an aide-comptable wants someone reliable who will process entries correctly and ask questions at the right time.

Your letter should show you know the routine tasks, the software, and that you can handle volume without letting errors slip through.

Subject: Application: Aide-comptable

Dear [Name],

I am applying for the aide-comptable position at [Company or firm]. I hold a BTS Comptabilité et gestion and have spent [x] years in accounting, first as an apprentice in a firm and then in the accounts payable team of a [sector] company.

In the firm, I recorded purchase, sales and bank entries for a portfolio of small business clients, from a bakery to an architect's office. I learned to sort incomplete documents, ask clients for missing receipts and prepare clean bank reconciliations before the chef de mission reviewed the file.

In my current role, I process supplier invoices received through our capture tool, check VAT rates and purchase order references, and prepare the weekly payment run. Each month I reconcile the main supplier statements and list any differences for the chief accountant. I work in Sage and use Excel daily for reconciliations.

Your offer mentions the move to e-invoicing. I took part in testing our new platform this year and would be glad to bring that experience. In the longer term I would like to take on more of the month-end closing, and I am preparing the DCG for that purpose.

I would be happy to meet you.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to an accounting firm without firm experience?

Yes. Explain that you know the entries and the software, and show that you can handle several clients with different documents. Firms value adaptability because each client sends receipts differently. Mention any freelance or association bookkeeping you have done.

Should I mention my goal of becoming an accountant?

Yes, briefly. Employers appreciate clerks who want to progress, especially firms that train their staff. Say it in one sentence, and make sure the rest of the letter shows you are ready to do the current job well first.

Is a cover letter still read for this job?

Often it is skimmed. Keep it short and practical so the key information is visible: diploma, software, type of entries, availability. A clear, error-free letter also serves as proof of your attention to detail.
