For an accountant, the cover letter has to prove reliability rather than enthusiasm. Recruiters want to know which part of the accounting cycle you can handle alone, on what software, and in what kind of structure.

A short letter that answers these points clearly will do better than a long one about your love of numbers.

If the job ad mentions peaks around year-end or tax deadlines, a short sentence saying you are used to those periods is useful. Avoid promising unlimited overtime: French employers know working time rules apply and will value organisation over sacrifice.

Address it to the partner or manager named in the ad, or to the firm's managing partner. Talk about client portfolios, types of business you have handled and how you manage several deadlines at once, since that is the reality of firm work.

Can I write my cover letter in English?

Only for international groups or shared service centres that advertise in English. For most French companies and firms, write in French: you will exchange daily with French suppliers, tax authorities and auditors, and the letter is a first test of that.
