Working as a personal trainer in France
Search for coach sportif, éducateur sportif, coach fitness, préparateur physique or coach à domicile. Teaching or coaching sport for pay is regulated by the Code du sport. You need a diploma, title or CQP listed in the Code, such as the BPJEPS Activités de la forme, a STAPS degree or a fitness CQP, and you must declare your activity to obtain a professional card (carte professionnelle d'éducateur sportif), renewed periodically. Private certifications from abroad are often not recognised. EU qualifications can be assessed for recognition, and other candidates usually take a French diploma. Many coaches work under micro-entrepreneur status. Clients and gyms communicate in French, so a working level is needed.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
