Working as a sales associate in France

The French job title is vendeur or vendeuse, often with a specialty: vendeur en prêt-à-porter, conseiller de vente, vendeur en magasin. The role is not regulated and no diploma is legally required. The usual French qualifications are the CAP Équipier polyvalent du commerce, the Bac pro Métiers du commerce et de la vente and, at higher level, the BTS MCO. Sunday work depends on the area and is framed by law, and sales periods (soldes) follow official dates. For non-EU candidates, a residence permit allowing work is needed; student permits allow part-time work, which suits many retail contracts.

How to read these figures

The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.

The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.

Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
