How net pay is calculated
The calculator does not use an average percentage. It applies each employee contribution to its own base, as a French payslip does. In the private sector, below the monthly social security ceiling (€4,005.00 in 2026): capped basic pension 6.90%, uncapped 0.40%, Agirc-Arrco supplementary pension 3.15% and general balancing contribution 0.86%.
Above the ceiling, the capped pension stops and Agirc-Arrco band 2 takes over (8.64% + 1.08%), plus a 0.14% technical balancing contribution on the whole salary. Executives (cadres) and umbrella employees also pay the APEC contribution (0.024%). Unemployment and health insurance are no longer deducted from pay, except in Alsace-Moselle (1.30%, not handled here).
CSG (6.80% deductible, 2.40% non-deductible) and CRDS (0.50%) apply to 98.25% of gross pay up to four ceilings. Taxable net is net pay plus the non-deductible CSG and the CRDS: your withholding rate applies to that figure.
Tenured civil servants: 11.10% pension deduction on the base salary, 5% RAFP on bonuses up to 20% of the base salary, then CSG and CRDS. Apprentices: for contracts signed since 1 March 2025, only the part of the salary above 50% of the minimum wage (€933.51 a month) bears contributions, CSG and CRDS.
To go from net to gross, the calculator searches for the gross amount, to the cent, that produces the net you entered. Yearly mode divides by 12 (no 13th month). Rates were checked on 18 October 2026, with the minimum wage in force since 1 June 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a French gross salary to net?
Subtract employee contributions: basic and supplementary pension, CSG and CRDS. In the private sector, below the social security ceiling, they come to about 21% of gross pay. At the minimum wage, €1,867.02 gross gives €1,477.93 net a month.
What is the French minimum wage in 2026?
Since 1 June 2026, the minimum wage (SMIC) is €12.31 gross an hour, which is €1,867.02 gross a month for 35 hours and about €1,477.93 net. From 1 January to 31 May 2026 it was €1,823.03 gross a month.
Do executives (cadres) take home less for the same gross salary?
Below the ceiling, the legal gap is tiny: a 0.024% APEC contribution. The “25% for cadres” rule of thumb comes from disability and health cover, often more expensive, and from salaries above the ceiling. Enter your share of health and disability cover to match your payslip.
What is the difference between net before tax, taxable net and net after tax?
Net before tax is pay after contributions. Taxable net adds back the non-deductible CSG and the CRDS: income tax is based on it. Net after tax is what reaches your bank account once withholding tax is taken.
How is an apprentice’s net pay calculated?
For contracts signed since 1 March 2025, pay up to 50% of the minimum wage (€933.51 a month) is exempt from employee contributions, CSG and CRDS. Only the part above it is charged. Apprentice pay is also free of income tax up to the yearly minimum wage.
Does the calculator handle part-time work?
Yes. Enter your weekly hours: the social security ceiling is prorated and the hourly rate uses your monthly hours (weekly hours × 52 / 12).
Why does my payslip show a different net amount?
Your payslip may include health or disability cover, meal vouchers, overtime, absences, benefits in kind or the Alsace-Moselle scheme. These depend on your employer and the calculator cannot know them.
