Working as a lifeguard and swimming teacher in France
In France, teaching swimming for pay and using the title maître-nageur sauveteur are regulated. You need the BPJEPS spécialité éducateur sportif mention Activités aquatiques et de la natation (or another diploma listed in the Code du sport), a CAEPMNS renewed every five years and a carte professionnelle d'éducateur sportif. The BNSSA alone covers supervision only. Foreign qualifications must be recognised by the French sports administration before you can work. Search for 'maître-nageur sauveteur', 'MNS', 'éducateur sportif activités aquatiques' or, for supervision only, 'surveillant de baignade BNSSA'. Many pools belong to municipalities, which also recruit through the ETAPS civil service grade.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
