Psychologist resume example

In France, psychologists work in very different settings, and the setting shapes the job. In a hospital, a clinical psychologist might see patients on a psychiatric ward, support people with cancer and their families, or run assessments in a memory clinic.

In a medico-social setting such as an institution for children with disabilities (IME) or a nursing home, the work combines individual sessions, family meetings and support for the care team. In schools, psychologists of the Éducation nationale assess pupils and advise on orientation. In private practice, you see adults, adolescents or couples, often through psychotherapy with a chosen orientation (psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, systemic). Assessment is a recurring task: cognitive tests, personality tests, neuropsychological batteries. Writing reports, taking part in team meetings and keeping regular supervision are part of the professional routine.

Tips

  • Write your Master's title and specialty exactly, since the psychologist title in France depends on it.
  • Give your ADELI or RPPS registration number once you have it.
  • State your therapeutic orientation and any extra training (EMDR, CBT, family therapy).
  • List the tests you use routinely, as many posts include assessment.
  • Describe your populations: children, adolescents, adults, older people, people with disabilities.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing up psychologist, psychotherapist and psychiatrist titles, which have different legal meanings in France.
  • Listing placements without saying what you actually did (assessment, follow-up, groups).
  • Leaving out your registration number.
  • Using jargon from a single theoretical school when applying to a mixed team.

Working as a psychologist in France

The title of psychologue is legally protected in France. You need a Bachelor's and a Master's in psychology, including a supervised professional placement, then registration on the national list of health professionals (ADELI, moving to RPPS). The psychotherapist title is separate and has its own requirements. EU-trained psychologists can request an authorisation to use the title. School psychologists are mostly recruited through a competitive exam. Some sessions are reimbursed through the « Mon soutien psy » scheme for psychologists who join it. Search for « psychologue clinicien », « neuropsychologue », « psychologue du travail » or « psychologue en EHPAD ».

Frequently asked questions

Can a psychologist trained abroad use the title in France?

The title of psychologue is protected. With an EU qualification, you can request an authorisation to use it from the French authorities, who check that your training matches the French Master level and may ask for compensation measures. Outside the EU, the process is more complex and often requires French studies.

Should I include my Master's thesis?

Yes, in one line with its title. It shows a clinical interest and often comes up in interviews. If it relates to the post, for example a thesis on autism when applying to an IME, mention it again in the cover letter.

How do I present part-time posts?

Many psychologists in France combine several part-time posts or a salaried post with private practice. List each one with its setting and time share, for example half-time in a nursing home and half-time in private practice. Recruiters are used to this pattern.
