Psychiatrist resume example

French public psychiatry is organised by sectors: each area of the country is attached to a team that runs an inpatient unit and outpatient structures such as the CMP (centre médico-psychologique), day hospitals and mobile teams.

A psychiatre working in this system moves between these places during the week. The work includes assessing new patients, adjusting treatment, meeting families, and coordinating with nurses, psychologists and social workers in team meetings. Psychiatrists also write the medical certificates for involuntary admissions and review them at the deadlines set by law, which makes legal accuracy part of the job. Others work in private clinics, in liaison psychiatry within general hospitals, in child and adolescent psychiatry (pédopsychiatrie), or in private practice, where consultations and long-term follow-up take most of the time.

Tips

  • State whether you work with adults, children and adolescents, or older people.
  • Mention your settings: sector, CMP, emergency, liaison, private clinic or private practice.
  • List psychotherapy training separately, with the name of the course or diploma (DU).
  • Show experience of involuntary admissions, which every public post will require.
  • Add your RPPS number once you are registered with the Ordre des médecins.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing patient details on the CV, even anonymised clinical anecdotes.
  • Listing therapies you know of but are not trained to practise.
  • Leaving out on-call experience in psychiatric emergencies.
  • Using foreign service names without explaining the French equivalent.

Working as a psychiatrist in France

Psychiatry is a regulated medical specialty in France: you need a medical degree, the DES of psychiatry and registration with the Ordre des médecins. Child psychiatry is accessed through a specific option within that training. EU diplomas are recognised automatically, while doctors trained outside the EU go through the EVC exam and a consolidation period. Most public posts are attached to a psychiatric sector run by a general hospital or a specialised hospital (EPSM, CHS). Search for « psychiatre », « praticien hospitalier psychiatrie », « pédopsychiatre » or « psychiatre CMP ».

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist in France?

A psychiatre is a doctor with a specialty diploma in psychiatry, who can prescribe medication and sign medical certificates. A psychologue holds a master's degree in psychology and does assessments and therapy, but cannot prescribe. Make sure your CV uses the right title.

Can I work in France as a psychiatrist with a foreign diploma?

EU specialist diplomas are recognised automatically, followed by registration with the Ordre des médecins. Non-EU diplomas go through the EVC exam and a supervised consolidation period. In both cases, fluent French is essential because the clinical work relies on language.

Should I mention my psychotherapy orientation?

Yes, briefly. Teams often look for complementary profiles, and a CMP may want someone trained in CBT or family therapy. Give the training you completed and how you use it, without opposing it to other approaches.
