Prison officer resume example

A surveillant pénitentiaire works inside a French prison, run by the Ministry of Justice's prison administration (administration pénitentiaire).

The shift starts with the count of inmates and the handover from the previous team. During the day you open and close cells, escort detainees to the visiting room, the infirmary, workshops, classes or court transfers, carry out cell searches and body searches, and watch the exercise yard from a post or a control room. You write incident reports, keep the wing log and note anything that may signal a risk, from a change in behaviour to a suspected phone. Officers work in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays, and the job mixes firmness with constant dialogue: much of the security of a wing depends on how you talk to people.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Holder of the [diploma] with [x] months as a security guard at [Site] in [City], where I handled access control and night rounds. I am preparing the prison officer competitive exam and want to work in a team where calm and discipline matter more than force.

Experienced

Prison officer for [x] years at [Establishment], in remand and sentenced wings. I run cell searches, escorts and visiting room shifts, write precise incident reports and have trained new officers on the wing routine.

Career change

Former youth worker retraining into the prison administration. I have years of experience defusing tense situations with young people and want to bring that ability to listen and set limits to a detention wing.

Tips

  • Put any security, military, police or social work experience first: it shows you can handle tension.
  • Mention night shifts and weekend work you have already done, since the rota is the main reason people leave.
  • Describe the type of establishment you worked in (maison d'arrêt, centre de détention, maison centrale) if you are already an officer.
  • Show your writing skills with a line about reports, as written observations follow many incidents.
  • Add first aid certificates and sports activities: the physical test and fitness matter in this job.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting the job as pure guarding, with no mention of dialogue with detainees.
  • Leaving gaps in your history unexplained, since a background check is part of recruitment.
  • Using a combative tone ("tough", "no tolerance") that worries rather than reassures.
  • Forgetting the driving licence, useful for escort and transfer teams.

Working as a prison officer in France

Surveillant pénitentiaire is a civil service post in the Ministry of Justice. Access is through a national competitive exam (concours), followed by paid training at the École nationale d'administration pénitentiaire (ENAP) in Agen and placements in establishments. French nationality is required, along with a criminal record compatible with the role, age and fitness conditions set in each exam notice. Foreign diplomas do not replace the exam. Look for « surveillant pénitentiaire », « surveillante pénitentiaire » or « agent pénitentiaire » and follow the exam calendar published by the Ministry of Justice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CV to become a prison officer in France?

Entry is mainly through a national competitive exam (concours) organised by the Ministry of Justice, with a written part and an interview. A CV still helps: it supports your application file, guides the interview panel and is required for specialised posts later in your career.

What experience do recruiters value most?

Anything involving authority combined with human contact: private security, the army, the gendarmerie reserve, youth work, hospital or psychiatric settings. The panel looks for people who stay calm, write clearly and can follow procedures to the letter while keeping a normal relationship with detainees.

Should I list sports on my prison officer CV?

Yes, briefly. Physical fitness is assessed and the job involves standing, walking long distances on the wing and sometimes restraining someone. A regular sport, especially a team or combat sport practised in a club, gives the panel a concrete idea of your condition and discipline.
