Police officer resume example

In France, the street-level police officer of the national police is the gardien de la paix. Alongside the police nationale, which covers cities, there is the gendarmerie nationale, a military force covering rural and suburban areas, and the police municipale, employed by town councils with narrower powers.

A gardien de la paix starts the shift with a briefing, then goes out on patrol by car, on foot or by bike, answers emergency calls, intervenes in domestic disputes, road accidents and fights, carries out identity and traffic checks, and takes complaints at the station. Every intervention ends with a written report (procès-verbal) that must stand up in court. With experience, officers move into investigation, public order units, road safety, border police, juvenile protection or specialist units, usually through internal selection and further training.

Tips

  • For a transfer or specialised unit, name your current unit, rank and qualifications such as OPJ or weapon instructor.
  • For a municipal police post, put the exam you passed and its year at the very top.
  • Describe types of interventions rather than individual cases, which stay confidential.
  • Include sports, first aid and driving licences: they matter for selection.
  • Keep the resume sober, without operational details that could expose colleagues or procedures.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Revealing details of ongoing cases or identifiable people.
  • Using military or foreign police ranks without the French equivalent.
  • Forgetting to mention qualifications obtained in service.
  • A heroic tone instead of factual descriptions.

Working as a police officer in France

Search for gardien de la paix, policier adjoint (a contract role without exam), agent de police municipale and gendarme or sous-officier de gendarmerie. All these posts require French nationality. The gardien de la paix is recruited by competitive exam, mainly open to holders of the baccalauréat, followed by paid training in a national police school. Municipal police officers pass a territorial exam, then must be hired by a town and approved by the prefect and the public prosecutor. The gendarmerie is military and recruits through its own exams. A clean criminal record and medical and physical fitness are checked.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a resume to join the French police?

Not for the gardien de la paix entrance exam itself, which is a competitive exam with written, physical and oral tests. A resume becomes useful for the oral, for applying to municipal police posts after passing their exam, for policier adjoint contracts and for internal moves to specialised units.

Can a foreign national become a police officer in France?

No. The national police, gendarmerie and municipal police require French nationality, because they exercise state authority. Foreign nationals interested in security work can look at private security, which has its own rules and professional card, or apply after naturalisation.

How do I present experience from a foreign police force?

If you have since become French, describe your former missions, unit and training in plain terms with the closest French equivalent. It will not replace the French exam, but it is valued at the oral and later for specialised posts.
