Firefighter resume example

A firefighter in France (sapeur-pompier) spends far more time on rescue and medical calls than on fires: a person who has collapsed at home, a road accident, a fall in the street, a gas leak, a flooded cellar, a nest of wasps.

At the fire station (centre d'incendie et de secours), a guard begins with the roll call, the check of vehicles and equipment, then sport and training in rescue techniques. When the alert sounds, you leave within minutes in an ambulance-type rescue vehicle (VSAV), a fire engine or a rescue truck, under a crew leader. In France firefighters are organised by département in services called SDIS. Most are volunteers who combine the role with another job; professionals work in long guards. Paris and Marseille have military firefighters. Private and airport fire services also employ fire safety staff.

  • List validated training modules and qualifications with dates: PSE1, PSE2, crew leader, specialties.
  • Mention your driving licences, especially C, which allows you to drive engines.
  • For fire safety jobs in the private sector, add SSIAP level and SST.
  • Show your sport practice briefly: physical tests are part of selection.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Telling dramatic intervention stories that breach confidentiality.
  • Not stating volunteer or professional status clearly.
  • Forgetting dates of qualifications that must be kept up to date.

Working as a firefighter in France

Search for sapeur-pompier professionnel (SPP), sapeur-pompier volontaire (SPV), pompier de Paris (the military brigade) and, in the private sector, agent de sécurité incendie (SSIAP), pompier d'aéroport (SSLIA) or pompier industriel. Professional firefighters are recruited by competitive exam, then appointed by a departmental fire service (SDIS); volunteers apply directly to their SDIS and are trained after medical and physical checks. The military units recruit through the army for Paris and through the navy for Marseille. First aid qualifications such as PSE1 and PSE2 are central. Nationality and fitness conditions differ by route, so check them before applying.

Frequently asked questions

How do you become a professional firefighter in France?

Professional firefighters are recruited by competitive exam (concours), then must be appointed by an SDIS, much like a laureate of a civil service exam looking for a post. Selection includes physical tests, written or aptitude tests and an interview. Many candidates first serve as volunteers, which gives experience and sometimes access to a specific exam route.

Can I be a volunteer firefighter while working another job?

Yes, it is the usual model. Volunteers sign a commitment with their SDIS, follow initial training, then take guards around their main job. Employers can sign agreements to release staff for calls. Mention this commitment on your resume.

What if I was a firefighter in another country?

Experience abroad does not give direct access to a French post. You will generally go through French selection and training, but you can describe your previous missions and qualifications, which help in interviews and for private fire safety or industrial fire services.
