Landscape gardener resume example

A landscape gardener builds outdoor spaces from a plan. On a new site the crew starts with groundwork: clearing, levelling, bringing in topsoil, laying drainage.

Then come the hard elements, such as paths in gravel or paving, low walls, edging, steps, timber decking and fences, followed by planting, turf laying or seeding, and the installation of automatic watering. A landscape gardener reads the designer's plan, marks out levels and curves on the ground and works with a mini excavator, a plate compactor and a turf cutter as well as hand tools. Most jobs are for private clients, housing developers and local authorities, with maintenance contracts filling the winter months. The work is physical and depends on the weather, and a good finish on the borders and joints is what clients notice.

Tips

  • Split your experience between creation work and maintenance, since French landscaping companies staff the two differently.
  • Name the materials you have laid (natural stone, concrete pavers, gravel stabiliser, composite or timber decking).
  • Put your CACES certificates and driving licence categories near the top.
  • Add photos of finished gardens you worked on, saying which part was yours.
  • Mention plant knowledge: recruiters value landscape gardeners who can identify species and spot planting mistakes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself a landscape architect or paysagiste concepteur, a protected title in France.
  • Listing machines without the matching CACES.
  • Leaving out the type of clients you worked for.
  • Ignoring maintenance experience, which keeps you employed in winter.

Working as a landscape gardener in France

Search for jardinier paysagiste, ouvrier paysagiste, chef d'équipe paysagiste or ouvrier d'entretien des espaces verts. The job is open without a diploma, but employers prefer the CAPa Jardinier paysagiste, the Bac pro Aménagements paysagers, the BP Aménagements paysagers or the BTSA Aménagements paysagers for team leader roles. CACES certificates are required to operate earthmoving machines, and a trailer licence helps. Be careful with titles: paysagiste concepteur is legally reserved for holders of recognised design diplomas, so builders use jardinier paysagiste. For private households, routine garden maintenance can fall under the services à la personne tax credit, whereas creation work does not, so clients often ask which part of a quote is eligible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a landscape gardener and a landscape designer?

The landscape gardener builds and maintains the garden; the designer creates the plan. In France the title paysagiste concepteur is reserved for holders of specific diplomas, so on your resume use jardinier paysagiste or ouvrier paysagiste unless you hold one of them.

Should I list my machine certificates?

Yes, with their category. A CACES for mini excavators or small loaders shows the employer you can operate them legally on site. Add any trailer licence too, since landscape crews often tow machines between sites.

How do I show the quality of my work?

Link to a set of photos of finished gardens, ideally with before and after shots, and describe your role. Recruiters look closely at paving joints, edges and levels, so close-up photos of these details say more than a wide view.
