Gardener resume example

A gardener looks after green spaces that already exist: private gardens, residential estates, company grounds, school grounds and municipal parks.

The work follows the seasons. In spring you mow, prepare beds and plant; in summer you water, weed and trim hedges; in autumn you collect leaves, plant bulbs and prune shrubs; in winter you prune trees, maintain tools and clear paths. A gardener uses mowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters and blowers, and checks them before each round. Much of the work is done alone or in a small crew, moving between sites with a van. Gardeners employed by French towns now work with very limited use of chemical treatments, so mulching, mechanical weeding and choosing plants that need little water have become everyday skills.

Career change

Former [previous job] retraining as a gardener after an adult training course in green space maintenance. Brings reliability, a habit of working outdoors in all weather and a real interest in plants, from identifying species to understanding soil and watering needs.

Tips

  • List the machines you can use and maintain; recruiters in green spaces read that section closely.
  • Mention your driving licence and any CACES, as gardeners often drive between sites and some use small loaders.
  • If you have worked for a town, say so: municipal experience is valued by other local authorities.
  • Show you know zero-pesticide maintenance methods, which have become the norm in France.
  • Give the type of sites you maintained (private gardens, estates, parks, sports fields).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing that you love nature without listing practical tasks.
  • Forgetting the driving licence, often a requirement.
  • Confusing garden maintenance with landscape design.
  • Leaving out safety training and protective equipment.

Working as a gardener in France

Search for jardinier, agent d'entretien des espaces verts, ouvrier des espaces verts or, in local authorities, agent technique espaces verts and adjoint technique territorial. The job is open without a diploma, but the CAPa Jardinier paysagiste, the Bac pro Aménagements paysagers and the BTSA Aménagements paysagers make hiring easier and lead to team leader roles. A driving licence is often required, and CACES certificates are asked for when you operate small earthmoving equipment. The use of chemical pesticides in public spaces and private gardens is heavily restricted in France, so employers expect knowledge of alternative methods. Private garden maintenance is part of the services à la personne sector, which brings a lot of work with individual households.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have no gardening diploma?

Many gardener jobs are open without a diploma, especially in private garden maintenance. Put your practical experience first: gardens you looked after, machines you used, seasonal tasks you know. A short training course or a CAPa later will help you move to better contracts or municipal posts.

Should I mention seasonal or casual gardening work?

Yes. Summer jobs in parks, work for neighbours, help on a farm or seasonal contracts in a landscaping company all show that you can handle outdoor physical work. Group them under one heading with the tasks you performed.

How do I show I can work alone?

Describe a round you managed yourself: number of sites in words or with [x], how you planned the week, how you dealt with clients' requests. Gardeners are often alone on site, so employers look for that proof of autonomy.
