Interior designer resume example

An interior designer, called architecte d'intérieur in France, redesigns the inside of homes, shops, offices or restaurants, from the first site survey to the handover of keys.

You measure the space, listen to how the client lives or works, and propose layouts, materials and lighting through plans, mood boards and 3D views. Once the design is approved, you draw the technical plans, write the specifications for each trade, consult contractors and compare their quotes. During the works you visit the site regularly, solve the surprises that appear behind old walls, check that the joiner and electrician follow the plans and keep the client informed. Some designers work alone with private clients; others join agencies working on retail chains, hotels or office fit-outs.

Tips

  • Attach a portfolio that shows plans and before/after photos, not only renders.
  • Specify the type of projects (residential, retail, hospitality, offices) and your role on each.
  • Mention site supervision experience clearly; agencies look for it beyond design skills.
  • List software in the order you use them most.
  • If you have worked on public-facing buildings, note your knowledge of ERP regulations.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A portfolio made only of 3D images with no built projects.
  • Confusing interior designer and decorator in how you present your role.
  • Leaving out budget responsibility, which clients care about most.
  • Not mentioning project scale or surface in some form.

Working as an interior designer in France

Search for 'Architecte d'intérieur', 'Décorateur d'intérieur' for decoration-focused roles and 'Concepteur d'espaces' in retail. Unlike 'architecte', the title is not legally protected, but most employers expect at least a Bac+3, often a five-year diploma from schools such as the École Boulle, ENSAAMA, Camondo or a CFAI-accredited school. Interior designers can renovate without an architect as long as the works do not require a building permit that must be signed by a registered architect. Working on shops, restaurants and offices means applying ERP rules on fire safety and accessibility. Freelancers need professional liability insurance before supervising works.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'architecte d'intérieur' a protected title in France?

The title is not protected by law the way 'architecte' is. The Conseil français des architectes d'intérieur (CFAI) offers a professional recognition based on training and experience, which many clients and agencies look at when hiring.

Should I include student projects?

Yes as a junior, but label them clearly and select the most technical ones, with plans and details. Once you have built projects, keep only the strongest student work or remove it.

How do I present freelance projects?

Group them under one freelance entry, with project types and your scope for each: design only, design and supervision, or full project management. Before/after photos are the best proof. Include the location and type of client.
