CAD technician resume example

A dessinateur-projeteur in French construction turns an architect's design and an engineer's calculations into drawings that a site can build from.

In a structural design office (bureau d'études béton armé), that means formwork and reinforcement drawings; in a steel firm, assembly and fabrication drawings; in a public works office, road and utility network plans (VRD). Most of the day is spent in AutoCAD, Revit, Allplan or Tekla, increasingly inside a shared BIM model. The job follows the French project phases, from the early design stages to execution drawings (plans EXE) and as-built drawings (plans de récolement). A projeteur goes further than a draughtsman: you propose technical solutions, check consistency with other trades and sometimes visit the site to survey existing conditions.

Tips

  • Name your speciality first: reinforced concrete, steel, timber, VRD or interior fit-out.
  • List software with your level and versions, since offices filter on it.
  • Mention the project phases you have worked on, using French terms (APS, APD, PRO, EXE).
  • Add a link to a portfolio with anonymised drawing extracts if confidentiality allows.
  • Show any BIM coordination experience, which is now requested in most offers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself "CAD operator" when you also design details and propose solutions.
  • Listing every software ever opened instead of the ones you use daily.
  • Sharing client drawings without permission in a portfolio.
  • Omitting the type of buildings or structures you drew.

Working as a CAD technician in France

The job is not regulated, but French employers usually expect a Bac+2 or Bac+3 in building or civil engineering: BTS Bâtiment, BUT Génie civil, construction durable, a Licence professionnelle in construction, or a Titre professionnel dessinateur projeteur (béton armé or construction métallique). Drawings follow French conventions and project phases, and documents are in French. Search « dessinateur-projeteur », « projeteur béton armé », « dessinateur BIM », « modeleur BIM », « dessinateur VRD » or « projeteur charpente métallique ». In mechanical industry, the same title exists with different software, so check the sector in each offer.

Frequently asked questions

Dessinateur or projeteur: which title should I use?

A dessinateur produces drawings from instructions. A projeteur also designs details, checks consistency and proposes solutions. If you do the second, use « dessinateur-projeteur » or « projeteur » on your resume, as French offices pay and recruit the two levels differently.

Is Revit required?

More and more offers ask for Revit or another BIM tool, especially in larger offices. AutoCAD is still used everywhere for 2D work. If you only know AutoCAD, mention any Revit training you have started, as it can make a real difference.

Do I need to know Eurocodes?

A projeteur does not size structures; the engineer does. But you should understand the requirements that affect drawings, such as concrete cover, anchorage lengths and minimum reinforcement. Mention that you can read calculation notes and apply them to drawings.
