Farmer resume example

A farmer in France is usually a business owner as much as a producer.

The farmer decides what to grow or raise, plans rotations, buys seed, feed and fertiliser, sells to a cooperative, a trader, a processor or directly to consumers, and keeps the accounts and the paperwork for the common agricultural policy declarations. The practical work depends on the farm: drilling and harvesting cereals, managing a dairy or beef herd, running a vineyard, growing vegetables under tunnels. Many farms are run by a couple, a family or partners in a GAEC, with employees at peak times. Farmer jobs also exist as salaried roles: farm manager on a large estate, crop manager, or head of livestock for an agricultural company.

Career change

Former [previous job] who retrained in agriculture through a BPREA and a year as a farm worker. Brings business management, budgeting and sales skills, and a clear project to develop direct sales from a small vegetable and egg farm.

Tips

  • Present the farm you ran or worked on with its productions and organisation (sole owner, GAEC, family farm), without figures you cannot back up.
  • Show management skills: budgets, purchasing, sales channels and staff.
  • Mention certifications you have worked with, such as organic farming or environmental labels.
  • For salaried farm manager roles, focus on results and decisions rather than daily tasks.
  • List your diplomas in their French names (BPREA, Bac pro CGEA, BTSA).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing manual tasks only and hiding management experience.
  • Leaving out the type of production, which matters most to employers.
  • Writing a career summary longer than the experience section.
  • Forgetting computer tools such as herd or field management software.

Working as a farmer in France

Search for agriculteur, exploitant agricole, chef d'exploitation, chef de culture or responsable d'élevage, depending on your production. Running a farm is not a regulated profession as such, but public support for young farmers setting up requires a recognised agricultural qualification, usually the BPREA, the Bac pro CGEA or a BTSA, together with a personalised installation plan. Taking over or enlarging a farm can also require authorisation under the contrôle des structures, and land sales often go through the SAFER. The Certiphyto is required to buy and use plant protection products. Farmers are insured through the MSA. Farms are often run as partnerships such as the GAEC or the EARL.

Frequently asked questions

How do I present years on a family farm?

As real professional experience, with your status (partner, family helper, employee) and your responsibilities. Recruiters for farm manager roles want to know which decisions were yours: rotations, purchases, sales, herd breeding. Being honest about your role is better than claiming the whole farm.

What should a farmer resume include for a salaried role?

The productions you know, the size and type of farms in words or with [x], machinery, management tasks, staff supervision and software. Add your diploma and any certificates such as Certiphyto. Keep it to two pages at most.

Should I mention my farm takeover plans?

If you apply to a farm looking for a future partner or successor, yes, as it is exactly what they want to hear. For a salaried job with no such prospect, keep it short so the employer does not fear you will leave quickly.
