Farm worker resume example

A farm worker carries out the practical work of a farm under the direction of the farmer or a team leader.

Depending on the farm, that means preparing soil, sowing, spreading, harvesting cereals, picking fruit or vegetables, pruning vines or orchards, feeding and moving livestock, milking, cleaning buildings and maintaining machines. On a mixed farm the same week can include driving a tractor in the fields, repairing a fence and helping with calving. Hours follow the seasons and the weather: long days at harvest, early starts for milking, quieter periods in winter used for maintenance. In France many farm workers start with seasonal contracts, such as the grape harvest or fruit picking, before moving to permanent posts on a single farm.

Tips

  • Name the type of farm (dairy, cereal, vineyard, market gardening, orchards) at the top: employers search by sector.
  • List the machines you drive and the size of tractors or harvesters, without inventing figures.
  • Mention Certiphyto and CACES if you have them, since they are often required.
  • Include seasonal work such as the grape harvest; it shows experience of physical agricultural work.
  • Give your driving licence categories, including trailer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a generic resume that does not say which crops or animals you know.
  • Hiding seasonal contracts, which agricultural employers value.
  • Forgetting to mention housing needs or mobility for remote farms.
  • Overstating machine experience you cannot show on the first day.

Working as a farm worker in France

Search for ouvrier agricole, ouvrier agricole polyvalent, agent de culture, ouvrier d'élevage, vacher or salarié agricole. For seasonal work, search for vendanges, cueillette or saisonnier agricole. Diplomas are not compulsory for most farm worker jobs, but the CAPa Métiers de l'agriculture, the Bac pro CGEA and the BPREA are the usual French qualifications. The Certiphyto certificate is required to use plant protection products professionally, and CACES certificates may be needed for some machines. Farm workers are covered by the MSA, the agricultural social security scheme, rather than the general one. Workers from outside the European Union need a work permit, often a seasonal one, before taking a job.

Frequently asked questions

Is seasonal work worth including on a farm worker resume?

Yes. Grape harvest, fruit picking, asparagus or vegetable seasons all show that you can keep up with physical work and long days. Group them under a seasonal heading with the farm or region and the tasks you did, and keep the more permanent jobs separate.

Should I mention my mechanical skills?

Definitely. Farms rely on machines, and a worker who can grease, change filters and spot a problem early saves the farmer time and money. Name the type of maintenance you can do and any welding experience.

Do I need a French agricultural diploma?

Not always for farm worker posts, where experience and a trial period count most. A CAPa, a Bac pro or a BPREA helps for permanent and more technical jobs. Present any foreign agricultural training in plain terms, saying what it covered.
