Assistant accountant resume example

As an assistant comptable, you handle the high-volume part of the books so that the accountant can focus on closing and analysis.

Most of the day goes into entering and checking supplier invoices, matching them with purchase orders and delivery notes, recording customer receipts and keeping supplier and customer accounts clean. You prepare payment runs for approval, send reminders for unpaid invoices, file supporting documents (now mostly scanned or received as e-invoices) and answer suppliers who ask when they will be paid. In smaller companies you also collect payroll variables such as absences and overtime. You usually report to a chief accountant or to the accounting firm that finalises the accounts, and the job is a common first step in a French accounting career.

Career change

Former administrative assistant who already handled invoices and expense claims for a sales team. I completed a professional title in accounting (titre professionnel gestionnaire comptable et fiscal) and want to move into a full assistant accountant role.

Tips

  • Separate accounts payable and accounts receivable on your CV so recruiters see your exact scope.
  • Give volumes in brackets (invoices per month, number of entities) when you know them.
  • Name the software and ERP you used, and the version of Sage if you know it.
  • If you are studying for a DCG, say so: it signals that you plan to grow in the role.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming year-end closing responsibility when you only helped prepare files.
  • Leaving the diploma out or writing it only in English, which hides a BTS or DCG from French recruiters.
  • Listing generic office skills before accounting ones.
  • Forgetting to mention the e-invoicing tools you used.

Working as an assistant accountant in France

Assistant comptable is not a regulated job, but French employers rely on recognised diplomas: the BTS Comptabilité et gestion, the BUT Gestion des entreprises et des administrations, or a professional title such as gestionnaire comptable et fiscal. The DCG (Bac+3) is the usual next step towards an accountant position. A foreign degree can work if you show knowledge of the Plan comptable général and French VAT. Search with « assistant comptable », « aide-comptable », « comptable fournisseurs » and « comptable clients ». Alternance contracts are common entry routes for students.

Frequently asked questions

What diploma do I need to be an assistant accountant in France?

Most employers ask for a BTS Comptabilité et gestion or a BUT GEA, both at Bac+2. Some accept a bac pro with experience, or a professional title in accounting obtained through adult training. A DCG opens the way to accountant roles later.

Is an apprenticeship worth putting first on my CV?

Yes. French recruiters treat an alternance in an accounting department or firm as real professional experience. Place it in your experience section with concrete tasks, not only under education, and name the software you used during it.

What is the difference with a comptable role?

The assistant handles daily entries, matching and follow-up under supervision. The comptable is responsible for the closing, adjustments and tax returns. In a small company the line is blurry, so describe precisely what you did rather than relying on the title.
