Prison officer cover letter example

Most prison officers join through the competitive exam, so the cover letter matters mainly for specialised assignments, internal mobility or a transfer request.

Whatever the case, the reader wants to see that you understand the reality of detention: shifts, confined spaces, tension, and the human side of the role. Keep it sober and factual.

Subject: Application for a post on the escort team, [Establishment]

Dear [Head of Establishment],

I have been a prison officer at [Establishment] for [x] years, assigned to the remand wing. I would like to apply for the post on the escort team described in the vacancy notice.

On the wing, I organise detainee movements every day: medical appointments, visiting room, workshops, and the internal checks that go with each one. I have taken part in several external escorts to the hospital with the duty officer, which taught me how much preparation and communication within the team reduce risk during a transfer. I hold the [driving licence category] and completed the specific training on [restraint or weapon module] last year.

I am used to rotating shifts and to working nights and weekends. My reports are regularly used by the wing officer for disciplinary proceedings, and I take care to describe facts precisely, without interpretation.

I am available to meet you and the escort team leader whenever it suits the service.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Why you chose the prison administration, in concrete terms
  • Experience handling conflict or vulnerable people
  • Acceptance of rotating shifts, nights and geographical mobility
  • Your ability to write accurate reports
  • Any posts or assignments you already hold (escorts, control room, visiting room)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Talking about vocation or justice in abstract terms without any example.
  • Ignoring the constraints of shift work and mobility, which the panel will raise anyway.
  • Describing detainees in a contemptuous way.
  • Sending one generic letter for every establishment without naming the post.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose which prison I will be posted to?

Only partly. After training, new officers express wishes, but postings depend on ranking and on the needs of the administration, often in the Paris region at first. Mention in your letter that you accept geographical mobility, as it shows you understand how the first posting works.

Should I mention a criminal record check in my letter?

No need. The administration carries out its own background inquiry and checks the criminal record as part of recruitment. Your letter should focus on your experience, your motivation and the specific post or assignment you are applying for.

How long should the letter be?

One page at most, in four or five short paragraphs. The readers are senior officers or HR staff in the prison administration who receive many requests. A clear structure, with the post named at the start and concrete examples in the middle, works better than a long statement of motivation.
