Hospital porter cover letter example

A porter's cover letter should be short and practical. The recruiter, often the head of the portering service or a senior health manager (cadre de santé), wants to see that you are reliable on the rota, safe with patients and comfortable in a hospital environment.

One or two real situations will say more than a list of qualities.

Subject: Application for a hospital porter position, [Hospital], [City]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I am applying for the brancardier position advertised by [Hospital]. For the past [x] years I have worked as an ASH and then as a porter in a general hospital, where I move patients between the wards, the emergency department, imaging and the operating suite on a rotating schedule including nights and weekends.

I have learned that a transfer is never just a trip down a corridor. Before each one, I check the patient's identity against the transport slip, look at the equipment needed and make sure drips and oxygen are secured. Last winter, a patient I was taking to the scanner became short of breath in the lift: I stopped, alerted the team with the emergency call and stayed with him until the nurse arrived. My AFGSU level 2 training helped me keep calm.

Your service works with a central dispatch system, which I already use daily. I am used to adapting when an urgent request comes in and to telling the regulator when a transfer will take longer than planned.

I would be glad to meet you to discuss the position and the organisation of your teams. I am available for an interview and can start at the end of my notice period.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Experience with patients who cannot move alone
  • Knowledge of hospital rules: identity checks, hygiene, confidentiality
  • Availability for nights, weekends and public holidays
  • Training held: AFGSU, manual handling, infection control
  • A concrete situation where you kept a patient safe or calm

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a generic healthcare letter that never mentions patient transfers.
  • Not stating your availability for night or weekend shifts.
  • Overstating your role in clinical care, which a cadre de santé will notice.
  • Sending a letter longer than one page for a role recruited on practical skills.

Frequently asked questions

Who should I address the letter to?

To the person named in the ad, often the cadre de santé of the portering service or the hospital's HR department. For a spontaneous application, write to the HR department and mention the service you are interested in, such as central portering or the emergency department.

Is a spontaneous application worth it for porter jobs?

Yes, especially in large hospitals that hire replacement staff for summer and holiday periods. Say you are available for short contracts: many porters start this way before getting a longer contract.

My French is basic. Can I still apply?

Patients, nurses and the dispatch line all speak French, and safety depends on understanding instructions quickly. You need conversational French that lets you check a patient's identity and report a problem. If you are still learning, say so honestly and mention the level you have reached.
