Hospital porter resume example

A brancardier moves patients around the hospital: from the ward to the operating theatre, from A&E to radiology, from a bed to a wheelchair and back.

Requests usually arrive through a dispatch screen or a central phone line, and the porter has to judge the order of priority with the regulator, because an emergency scan cannot wait behind a routine X-ray. Each transfer starts with an identity check against the wristband and the transport slip, then a decision on the right equipment: trolley, chair, bed with drip stand or oxygen. Along the way, the porter talks to patients who are often anxious or in pain, and watches for signs that something is wrong. Some porters also carry samples to the laboratory, blood products or patient files, and clean the trolleys between uses.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Former care assistant in a nursing home looking for a porter position in a hospital. I already know how to move patients who cannot walk, how to read a care sheet and how to apply hand hygiene and isolation rules. I hold the AFGSU level 2.

Experienced

Brancardier for [x] years in a university hospital, working on day and night rotas between A&E, imaging and the operating suite. I handle urgent transfers, oxygen-dependent patients and bariatric beds, and I train new porters on the dispatch software.

Career change

Ten years as a delivery driver, used to tight schedules and to finding my way around large sites. I now want a job with direct patient contact and have completed a manual handling course (PRAP) and the AFGSU to prepare for portering.

Tips

  • Name the departments you have worked with: A&E, theatre and imaging each show different skills.
  • Put the AFGSU and any manual handling training (PRAP, gestes et postures) near the top.
  • Mention night shifts, weekends and on-call rotas if you have done them.
  • If you come from care work, give examples of transfers you already performed safely.
  • Keep the CV to one page with short, concrete bullet points.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the job as simply pushing beds, without patient care or safety aspects.
  • Forgetting to mention infection control training when the hospital requires it.
  • Leaving out experience in nursing homes or ambulance work, which is directly relevant.
  • Listing medical tasks that a porter is not allowed to perform.

Working as a hospital porter in France

Brancardier is not a regulated job in France and no diploma is required by law. Hospitals train porters on site, but they value the AFGSU (attestation de formation aux gestes et soins d'urgence), manual handling training and prior work as an ASH, aide-soignant or ambulance worker. In public hospitals, porters can be titularised in the fonction publique hospitalière after a period on contract. Search for « brancardier », « agent de brancardage » or « brancardier urgences », and look at ASH roles, which sometimes include portering duties.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diploma to become a brancardier in France?

No diploma is legally required. Hospitals mostly recruit on experience and attitude, and train porters internally. The AFGSU, a manual handling course and a background as an ASH, care assistant or ambulance worker make an application stronger.

Is a hospital porter a public servant?

In public hospitals, porters can be hired on fixed-term contracts and later become titularised in the fonction publique hospitalière, usually in category C. Private clinics hire under private law contracts. Say on your CV which type of employer you have worked for.

Should I mention my physical fitness?

Not as a general claim. It is more convincing to mention that you have worked full shifts on your feet, handled heavy beds or bariatric patients, and used transfer aids correctly. The occupational health doctor will check fitness at hiring anyway.
