HGV driver cover letter example

Transport managers read an HGV driver's letter quickly. They want to know which licences you hold, whether your FIMO or FCO is valid, what you have driven and which routes you accept.

Keep it short and factual, mention your driving record and availability, and show that you respect rest times and the client.

Subject: Application for an HGV driver position (licence CE), national routes

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your advert for an HGV driver on national routes from [City] interests me directly. I hold licences C and CE, my FCO is valid until [year] and I have driven articulated lorries for [x] years.

At [Current company], I deliver chilled and frozen goods to retail warehouses across [region] and beyond, usually with two or three nights away per week. I check the refrigeration unit before each departure, keep temperature printouts for every drop and call the operations desk as soon as a slot is at risk. I plan my breaks with the tachograph and have never been fined for a driving or rest time infringement.

Your fleet of recent tractors and your work for [type of client] interest me, as does the possibility of regular routes. I also hold the ADR basic certificate and a forklift CACES, which can help on sites where drivers unload themselves.

I am available from [date] and can come in for a driving test at your depot whenever suits you.

Yours faithfully,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • Licence categories, FIMO or FCO and driver card
  • Vehicle types and goods already transported
  • Routes accepted: regional, national, international, nights away
  • Extra certificates such as ADR or CACES
  • Start date and contract type wanted

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not stating your licence categories in the first lines.
  • Saying you will 'drive anywhere' without saying which routes you really accept.
  • Forgetting to mention your FCO or FIMO validity.
  • Copying a generic transport letter that does not name the type of goods.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter really needed for HGV jobs?

Many haulage companies and agencies hire on the resume and a phone call. A short letter still helps when several drivers apply, especially if you explain the routes you accept, your specialism and your availability. Five or six sentences are enough.

Should I say I accept nights away?

Yes, be precise. Transport managers plan rotations and need to know if you can do full weeks away, a few nights or only day routes. A clear answer avoids interviews that lead nowhere.

How do I apply if I have just finished my training?

Mention the titre professionnel or training centre, the licences obtained and the vehicles used during your placements. Offer to take a driving test and say you are open to interim work, which is a common first step for new drivers.
