Delivery driver cover letter example

For delivery jobs, the letter mainly needs to reassure: you hold the right licence, you know the area, you can start early and you treat customers well.

A few lines are enough if they are specific about rounds you have done and the vehicles you have driven.

Subject: Application for a delivery driver position, [City] area

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your [City] depot is looking for a delivery driver, and my last [x] months on parcel rounds match that post closely. I have held a car licence for [x] years and currently deliver for [Current company] in [area].

Every morning I scan and load my van in the order of the round, then deliver to homes, shops and pickup points within the agreed window. I know the access issues of the town centre and the industrial zones well, and I call customers ahead when a building is hard to reach. When I return to the hub, my scanner and my remaining parcels match, with nothing unaccounted for.

Your company delivers [type of goods] to professionals, which interests me because it means regular customers and a fixed round. I am used to handling heavy items with a pallet truck and to working on Saturdays when needed.

I can start on [date] and am available for an interview or a trial day at your convenience.

Yours faithfully,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • Licence held and vehicle types driven
  • Areas or towns you know well
  • Type of deliveries already done
  • Handling and customer contact at the door
  • Availability for early starts or Saturdays

Mistakes to avoid

  • A long letter about passion for driving instead of concrete delivery experience.
  • Forgetting your licence date and category.
  • Not saying which hours or days you can work.
  • Spelling errors, which suggest carelessness with addresses and paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter needed for a delivery job?

Often not for agency or subcontractor roles, where a phone call and the resume decide. For a retailer, a wholesaler or a fixed B2B round, a short letter helps set you apart, especially if you know the local area well.

How can I explain a gap or several short contracts?

Delivery work relies heavily on interim and seasonal peaks, so short contracts do not shock recruiters. Group them and say what you learned: different vehicles, rounds and customers. Explain a long gap in one neutral sentence.

Should I mention a fine or lost points?

Not in the letter. If the employer asks, answer honestly. If your licence is clean, you can say so, because it matters for insurance and for the trust given to a driver alone all day.
