Bus driver cover letter example

Transport operators look for drivers who are safe, punctual and calm with the public. Your letter should confirm your licence and qualification, show how you handle passengers in difficult moments and state clearly that you accept rotating shifts.

If you are applying for a trainee driver programme, explain why public service suits you.

Subject: Application for an urban bus driver position, [City] network

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for the bus driver position on the [City] network operated by [Company]. I hold licence D and the passenger FIMO, obtained in [year], and I have driven urban buses for [x] years with [Previous operator].

On my current lines, which cross the town centre and two university campuses, I deal every day with heavy traffic and very different passengers. Last winter a passenger became aggressive over a ticket check; I stopped at a safe place, spoke calmly, alerted the control room and the situation was settled without anyone being hurt. I also assist wheelchair users several times a day with the ramp.

I work on rotating duties, including early mornings, evenings and Sundays, and I know the importance of being on time at the depot when a colleague depends on it. The extension of your network towards [district] and your new fleet of [electric or hybrid] buses interest me.

A driving test on one of your lines would let you judge my driving directly; I can come to the depot on any day that suits your planning.

Yours faithfully,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Frequently asked questions

What should I write if I apply for a trainee driver programme?

Explain your experience with the public, your reliability and why you want a public service job. Mention how long you have held your car licence and that you accept the shift system. Operators train you to drive; they select on attitude.

Should I mention knowledge of the local network?

Yes, if you have it. A driver who already knows the lines, districts and traffic points needs less route learning. Mention where you live too, since early starts at the depot make proximity useful.

Is it useful to mention languages?

In tourist cities, on airport shuttles and on coach tours, yes. English or another language helps with passenger information. Give a realistic level rather than 'fluent' if you only manage simple exchanges.
