Drywall installer cover letter example

A drywall contractor wants a quick view of your level: can you set out from plans, frame, board and joint alone, or do you need a lead hand?

State the systems you have built and the sites you have worked on, and show that you understand the link between your work and the painter's finish.

Subject: Application for Drywall Installer (plaquiste)

Dear [Manager's name],

I am applying for the drywall installer position at [Company]. Your company works on housing and office projects in [region], and I have spent the last [x] years on similar sites as a plaquiste.

After my CAP Plâtrier-plaquiste, I joined [Company], where I install partitions, wall linings with insulation and suspended ceilings. I set out from the plans with a laser level, fix rails and studs, board and handle jointing until the surfaces are ready for painting. On my last site, a residential building in [City], I built acoustic partitions between apartments and worked closely with the electricians so that boxes and cable runs were in place before boarding.

I am looking for a company where I can take on more responsibility on site, such as preparing material lists and organising a floor with a colleague. I hold a driving licence and I am used to early starts and travelling between sites.

I can start with a trial period on one of your sites if that helps you assess my work.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Your CAP or equivalent experience
  • The systems you install (partitions, ceilings, linings)
  • Whether you set out from plans
  • Your jointing level
  • Your mobility and availability for site work

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a generic construction letter that does not mention drywall systems.
  • Overstating your setting-out or jointing autonomy.
  • Forgetting to give a phone number, since site managers usually call back.
  • Writing a long letter: contractors read applications on their phone between sites.

Frequently asked questions

Should I name the manufacturer systems I have installed?

Yes, if you have built specific systems, such as high-acoustic partitions or fire-rated ceilings, from the board manufacturer's technical documentation. Naming the type of system rather than just 'plasterboard' shows that you follow assembly specs (stud spacing, number of layers, screw pitch), which is exactly what site managers check at handover.

Should I mention fire-rated partitions?

Yes, if you have built them. Fire-rated assemblies follow manufacturer specifications on boards, layers and fixings, and companies working on offices, hotels or hospitals need installers who respect them exactly. Mention the type of building where you installed them.

Can I apply without a CAP?

Yes. The trade is not regulated and experience counts. Describe what you have done on site and who trained you. If you plan to obtain the CAP through validation of experience (VAE), mention it, as it shows commitment to the trade.
