Dietitian cover letter example

Dietitian recruiters vary widely: a hospital cadre de santé, a catering company manager or a clinic. Each looks for something different, so the letter must show you understand the setting: clinical nutrition, menu planning or patient follow-up.

Concrete examples of care plans or menus carry the most weight.

Subject: Application: dietitian position, [Structure], [City]

Dear [Name],

After three years in a geriatric hospital, I would like to join [Structure] as a dietitian. I hold a BTS in dietetics and currently follow patients in acute and rehabilitation units and work closely with the catering department.

In geriatrics, undernutrition is often the first problem to tackle. I screen patients on admission, adjust the diet and texture with the nursing team and follow their weight and intake until discharge. Last year, I worked with the speech therapist and the kitchen to update the texture-modified menus, so that patients with swallowing disorders get meals that look and taste closer to the standard menu.

Your structure is developing a therapeutic education programme for patients with diabetes and obesity. I completed the training in therapeutic patient education and would like to take part in group sessions and individual follow-up, while continuing to work with the catering team.

I can start on [date] and would welcome a meeting to see how your education programme is organised.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Your diploma and the settings you know
  • Pathologies or populations you have experience with
  • Therapeutic education or prevention work
  • Collaboration with doctors, nurses or kitchen teams
  • Availability and type of contract sought

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about healthy eating in general rather than your practice.
  • Using the same letter for a hospital and for a catering company.
  • Not mentioning collaboration with kitchen or nursing teams.
  • Promising results on weight that no dietitian can guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What do catering companies look for in a dietitian?

Menu planning skills, knowledge of nutritional recommendations for collective catering and food safety, and the ability to work with chefs and sales teams. Mention any experience with school, company or nursing home catering and with large volumes of meals.

Should I mention a specialisation like eating disorders?

Yes, if the post concerns that population, and give your training and experience. For a general hospital post, keep it short and focus on the pathologies of the department you apply to.

Should I attach examples of menus or education materials?

Not with the first application. Mention the documents you have produced, such as a menu cycle for a nursing home or a leaflet for patients on a low-salt diet, and bring them to the interview. For catering posts, a sample menu cycle often moves the discussion forward.
