Dietitian resume example

A diététicien designs and adapts diets for people who are ill, at risk or simply want to change how they eat.

In a hospital, the dietitian screens patients for undernutrition, adjusts texture-modified meals for those with swallowing problems, sets up tube feeding with the medical team and teaches patients with diabetes or kidney disease how to manage their meals at home. In collective catering, the job is about menu planning, nutritional balance and compliance with recommendations for schools or nursing homes, in close contact with the kitchen. In private practice, consultations focus on weight management, digestive disorders, sports nutrition or eating disorders, and the dietitian spends time building a relationship with each patient over several sessions, often alongside a doctor or psychologist.

Tips

  • State your diploma clearly (BTS in dietetics or BUT génie biologique, dietetics option).
  • Specify the pathologies and settings you have worked in.
  • Mention therapeutic education training, which hospitals often require.
  • For catering roles, highlight volume, menu planning and food safety.
  • Show that you can work with doctors and kitchen teams, not only with patients.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the title "nutritionist" alone, which in France usually refers to a doctor.
  • Presenting the job as only about weight loss.
  • Omitting experience in collective catering, which many employers value.
  • Forgetting to mention your registration once you hold the diploma.

Working as a dietitian in France

Diététicien is a protected title in France, regulated by the Public Health Code. You need a recognised diploma, mainly a BTS in dietetics or the BUT génie biologique with the dietetics option, and your diploma must be registered before you practise. Foreign diplomas require an authorisation to practise from the regional authorities. Nutritionniste usually refers to a doctor. Jobs are found in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, collective catering companies and private practice. Search for « diététicien », « diététicienne nutritionniste » or « diététicien restauration collective ».

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between diététicien and nutritionniste in France?

Diététicien is a protected title requiring a specific diploma. Nutritionniste usually refers to a doctor with additional training in nutrition, who can prescribe. Many dietitians use the title diététicien nutritionniste, but recruiters search mainly for diététicien.

Can I work in France with a foreign dietetics diploma?

You need an authorisation to practise, granted after a review of your training by the regional authorities. Applicants from EU countries may be asked to complete compensation measures. Plan for the delay and mention the status of your application on your CV.

Are consultations with a dietitian reimbursed?

In private practice, consultations are generally not reimbursed by the Assurance maladie, though some mutuelles cover part of them. In hospitals and some health centres, dietitians are salaried. This shapes where most jobs are found.
