Osteopath resume example

Most ostéopathes in France work in their own practice or share premises with physiotherapists, midwives or other therapists.

A typical session lasts around three quarters of an hour: the osteopath takes a detailed history, checks for warning signs that call for a referral to a doctor, examines posture and mobility, then treats with manual techniques adapted to the person, from an office worker with neck pain to a pregnant woman or an infant. Patients come directly, without a prescription, and pay the session themselves, with many mutuelles reimbursing part of it. Beyond treatment, a large part of the job is building a practice: being listed on booking platforms, working with local doctors and sports clubs, and managing accounts and social contributions as a self-employed professional.

Tips

  • Name your school and specify that it is approved by the ministry.
  • Mention your registration with the ARS, which every practice and patient may ask about.
  • State your areas of focus: infants, pregnancy, sport, occupational pain.
  • Show that you know when to refer a patient to a doctor.
  • If you are a health professional too, put that title first: it changes how you are perceived.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Promising to treat conditions that require medical care.
  • Using the term "doctor" or medical titles that do not apply to osteopaths.
  • Forgetting to state whether you trained full-time or in a programme for health professionals.
  • Listing techniques without saying for which patients you use them.

Working as an osteopath in France

The title of ostéopathe is protected in France. You need a diploma from a school approved by the ministry of health, a five-year programme after the baccalauréat, or a specific programme for doctors and physiotherapists, then registration with the ARS. Some techniques, on infants and the cervical spine for example, require a prior medical opinion. Sessions are not reimbursed by the Assurance maladie but often partly by mutuelles. Foreign qualifications need an authorisation to use the title. Search for « ostéopathe », « ostéopathe remplaçant », « ostéopathe collaborateur » or « ostéopathe du sport ».

Frequently asked questions

Is osteopathy regulated in France?

Yes. The title of ostéopathe is protected and requires a diploma from a school approved by the ministry of health, followed by registration with the regional health agency (ARS). The rules also limit some acts, for example on infants and the cervical spine, without a prior medical opinion.

Can I use my foreign osteopathy diploma in France?

You need an authorisation to use the title, granted after a review of your training. Applicants with EU qualifications go through a recognition procedure that may require compensation measures. Contact the ARS early, as the process can take several months.

Do osteopaths look for jobs or start their own practice?

Most work independently, but many start with replacements (remplacements) or as an assistant in an established practice. Some salaried posts exist in sports clubs, spas or companies. A CV is mainly useful for these posts and for joining a multidisciplinary practice.
