Buyer cover letter example

Purchasing managers want a buyer who understands their categories, their suppliers and their internal clients. Show that you know what they buy, give an example of a negotiation or sourcing project with its method, and explain how you work with engineering, quality or stores.

Avoid presenting purchasing only as a fight on price.

Subject: Application for Industrial Buyer, [Company], ref. [Reference]

Dear [Name],

The metal parts family described in your industrial buyer ad for the [City] site is very close to what I have been buying for [x] years at [Current company], a manufacturer of agricultural equipment.

I manage around [x] suppliers of machined, welded and laser-cut parts, mostly SMEs in France and Spain. Last year, steel price swings made our contracts hard to manage, so I rebuilt our cost models with engineering and introduced price revision clauses linked to a public index. This gave both sides visibility and avoided several difficult renegotiations. I also qualified a second supplier for our most critical parts after a fire at one of our subcontractors, working closely with quality on first article inspections.

I enjoy the technical side of purchasing: reading drawings, discussing tolerances with designers and finding with suppliers where cost can be removed without hurting quality. I speak English and Spanish and travel regularly for supplier audits.

I am available to visit the [City] site and talk through your sourcing priorities on this family.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

How can I move from retail buying to industrial buying?

Emphasise negotiation, supplier management and analytical skills, and show interest in technical products, for example through training or your previous studies. Target categories close to what you know, such as packaging or indirect purchasing, before moving to highly technical families.

Should I mention public procurement experience?

Yes. Public buyers in France follow the public procurement code, with formal tenders and strict rules. This experience is valued in large companies too, because it shows rigour in tender management and documentation. Explain which procedures you handled.

Is English required for buyer roles?

In most industrial groups, yes, because suppliers and colleagues are often abroad. Mention your level and give an example of a negotiation or audit conducted in English. For local or public purchasing roles, French is the priority.
