Building caretaker cover letter example

Landlords and syndics are hiring someone residents will see every day, often someone who will also live on site. The letter should show that you are reliable, practical and good with people.

Explain what you already do in common areas and with residents, and say whether you can take the accommodation.

Subject: Application for the caretaker post, Résidence [Name], [City]

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for the resident caretaker post at Résidence [Name], advertised by [Landlord]. For the past [x] years I have worked as a caretaker in a private co-ownership of [x] flats in [City], where I handle cleaning, technical rounds and relations with residents and the syndic.

Each week I check lighting, fire doors and the lifts, report faults through the syndic's online platform and let contractors in. I carry out small repairs myself, such as changing bulbs, adjusting door closers or replacing a broken lock, which saves the co-ownership time. I also organise bin collection and waste sorting, and remind residents of the rules when needed.

I would now like to work in social housing, where tenant relations and move-in inspections are a larger part of the job. I am used to listening to residents calmly and to passing on serious situations to the right people. My family of [x] people is ready to move into the lodge, and I am available from [date].

I can come to visit the residence and meet you whenever suits you.

Yours faithfully,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Experience with cleaning and technical rounds
  • Relationship with residents and handling complaints
  • Minor repair skills
  • Availability for an on-site post
  • Knowledge of the employer type: social landlord or private syndic

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to say if you accept the on-site accommodation.
  • Writing a letter about cleaning only, with nothing about residents.
  • Not naming the residence or employer in the subject line.
  • Promising to be available at all hours, which employers know is not realistic or legal.

Frequently asked questions

Who reads the letter for a caretaker post?

In social housing, it is usually the agency manager or HR department of the landlord. In private buildings, it is the syndic, sometimes with members of the co-owners' council. Adapt the vocabulary: tenants and agency for a landlord, co-owners and council for a syndic.

Should I mention my family in the letter?

Only if the post includes accommodation. Then a short sentence on the size of your household helps the employer check the lodge is suitable. For a non-resident post, there is no reason to mention your family situation.

How do I stand out without caretaker experience?

Highlight experience close to the job: cleaning in buildings, maintenance in a hotel or school, reception work, security. Give one example of a practical problem you solved and one of a difficult person you handled well. These two points are what the reader is looking for.
