Working as a veterinary nurse in France
Search for ASV, auxiliaire spécialisé vétérinaire, assistante vétérinaire or auxiliaire vétérinaire qualifié. The job is not regulated as a profession in France, unlike veterinary nursing in the UK, so there is no register to join. Clinics do, however, expect the ASV qualification, prepared in about two years through apprenticeship with a specialised training body (GIPSA is the best known) and a placement in a clinic. Foreign nursing qualifications are not converted automatically, but clinics may hire experienced nurses and place them according to their skills. Remember that an ASV in France works under the vet's direct responsibility and also covers reception, invoicing and stock, so fluent French is needed.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
